I ask because I've noticed that 99% of the time unless I intentionally pull a reverse Leeroy Jenkins, I am the guy wayyyyy up in front, whether I am running a fast mech or not.

(Just for a reference point, although I have occasionally used lower rated engines when I was forced to by a mech's max engine rating, a desired build (like the 4x uac jager) or just a desire to mess around, generally the lowest I will go in engine rating is 250 due to 2.0 DHS, and as of late I've been piloting mostly heavy and assault mechs).

I was wondering if this is because you are all ******* cowards playing cautiously, or if you have low rated engines, or what.

Note that I'm not talking about gathering at a ridge or other hot spot (although there is that too), I'm talking about glancing at my minimap 30-60 seconds in and seeing your coward ***** mechs lagging wayyyy behind.

Is it just me? It's got to be...

Its really hard to find a meat shield lancemate to partner up with when you guys are all lagging behind.

How large of an engine am I allowed to put in?

Jenner/Raven: 280xl-300xl
Cicada: 300xl or 320xl
Blackjack: 235xl
Centurion: 275std (350xl on 9D)
Hunchback: 260std
Trebuchet: 325xl (350xl on 3C)
Dragon: 350xl
Catapult: 300xl
Cataphract: 280std, 300std, 300xl, 325xl
Stalker: 280std, 300std, 300xl
Highlander: 325xl
Atlas: 300std, 350std

Or in other words, typically the largest (or nearly the largest) the chassis will accept.
I do try to use this as a guideline, but hardly any mechs can actually fit large enough engines.

it´s simple... i am usually the one who is standing a bit behind you until you drag the fire on yourself :(

hehe..nah, in all seriousness...

i don´t aim for the max engine, unless for my light mechs...

i am always looking for a good balance between mobility and weaponry... hard to tell a formula, since it´s more "the right feel for it" and heavily depending on the single chassis

All but one ar at or near chassis speed cap, regardless of class.

Speed is maneuverability, maneuverability is armor, even for an assault. :(

Virtually all of my 25 mechs run the largest engine they can. It's pretty much Step Number One in making a build. I'll occassionally lower it a bit if I need some tonnage, or choose a different one if there's a much better option to be had in terms of internal crits or tonnage per speed, but generally speaking I run the fastest engine I can.

However, running out in front of your whole team is simply playing badly, unless you're scouting. Your mech doesn't have to run at 100% throttle all the time, you know. Just because you can do 100kph doesn't mean you should always do so.

Me? I usually run in the middle of the pack. I let the foolish players draw the initial fire, and I wait to engage until my team's Assaults are doing their job.

Unless, of course, I'm in an assault as well in which case I'm right alongside the rest.

I've been running a lot of heavies and assaults lately and usually run between 250-325 on them. I tend towards 275-300 for assaults and 250-300 for heavies. I actually usually leave the stock engine in my mediums though I have a CN9-AL that uses a 250 and some Blackjacks that use a standard 200.

Lights: Minimum 120km/h. Typically 129km/h.
Mediums: Minimum 80. Typically at 80, too. Exception is the Cicada, which, depending on the config, will go at the very minimum 100km/h. Usually closer to 129km/h, though.
Heavies: Minimum 64.8km/h. Can't really say a typical speed, though. Got a Catapult that goes 78km/h, and two Cataphracts (4X that goes 59, 3D that goes 64.8. Might trial an XL 320 in it, though.)
Assaults: 48km/h, minimum and typical. I only have an Atlas!

If this sample is any indication, this is all the more reason for PGI to implement the Commissar perk I've been asking for.

I should be able to wing one of you guys and force everyone's throttle up to 100%. Anyone found running in circles or into a wall will be alpha struck.

:(.

In the STK's I own I have all on standard engine that are with 4x XLRM's, then I have speedboat with biggest standard engine maxed out armor on it ergo my fullhardy tank if I might say so. In my PPC boat I have XL engine in trial test, just so that it goes 70kph.

In general I use slightly bigger engine that it comes with from "shop", due only few have felt good on stock engine and on those STK's with 4 XLRM speed isnt a factor that counts alot in my book. In Catapults I have variety of engines from stock to biggest I can fit to fill my needs, sometimes I just love to run fast and be nuisance with few small LRM's and partially play a scout as well.

As for the question "how long does it take for me to find pieces and parts for single new chasis" I usually play 15 or games with each configuration before tossing the idea to trashbin, and change it... most likely its a bit bigger engine.

I hate stopping, no matter what engine I'm using. People who stop walking forwards are *******. I don't care if I lead the charge, they just have to follow like men.

I cannot run anything slower than 80 kph, the lack of speed and agility for more firepower just isn't my playstyle. Therefore I usually run the medium mechs with the most powerful standard engines and run it as a zombie skirmisher.

Unless I'm in an Assault (and even sometimes then) I'm at the front of the pack probably 80% of the time.

However, I usually put it down to other players taking forever to get moving than the speed of my own mech. I don't know why it is, but I'm almost always the first person moving by a good 5 or 10 seconds.

I know exactly what you mean, Sephlock.

To answer your question, the top speed depends on the purpose of the mech, but the engine is usually in the largest 1/4 for a given mech.

Could it have something to do with loading times? Like, the people who are lagging WAY BEHIND just got into the match a bit later?

That's my current hypothesis.

SDR, JR7, CDA: no less than 125 kph
CN9, DRG: about 100 kph
HBK, CPLT: about 80 kph
CTF, AS7: about 60 kph

But, the real question was, where was the rest of our team? I'm usually the guy who starts flanking them while you push, and dies a horrible death because after they finished with you, they turned on me ...

i try to get my mediums up over 80kph,the non 1x blackjacks i settle for mid 70s. Jagers i'm around 70. i usually upgrade the engine slightly if i have spares lying around that would fit. don't use XLs that much unless it came with the mech to begin with so i try to avoid max engines so i cna have room for things like...weapons. i bumped my one lonely stalker to about 54 w/o speed boost.

as far as where i am, usually i try to find an assault to follow behind which usually leaves me at the back of the pack for when all the lights come running by to hit them from behind. though generally if there are 3 assaults on my team i usually seem to end up following the one that goes off on their own. i feel bad about abandoning him at that point so i try to stay with him and usually die because of it.

unless it's one of those who likes to fire their weapons every .05 seconds to draw a line in the ground for them to follow the entire way or something. then i tell myself "i'm not going to get shot in the back by this guy" and run off to find the others. weapons group testing doesn't take THAT long.

Whatever will fit after I've gotten the weapon/equipment loadout I'm after. Then I tweak as I play. If I find I don't need that much ammo, for instance, I'll remove some and up the engine size. I have no hard rules other than the 250 minimum.
