Just a quick word of advice, and it will make a world of difference..

Start taking command of the team by becoming the 'Team Commander'. It helps so much with directing people at the beginning of the match.

This is what I normally do (and it seems to work okay so far)

1. Ask if there are any premades (they will be upset if you divide up their lance)

2. If there are none (if there are, just leave them together), pair up the heavy/assault as well as the medium/light as best you can. Sometimes, you won't be able to do this perfectly, so opt to put the fastest together, and the slower together. (You could opt to put a few into Charlie Lance if you wanted)

3. Set up a general strategy. (start by setting 'move' orders, then set down a 'defend' icon once you reach that spot. You don't want to be too hasty with your orders until you see what they are doing.) It helps to move them into a conservative position, you don't want to get flanked, or have someone do something and you are too far away to respond.

4. Assign your lights (if you have any) a sector to start scouting. A simple command such as "Lights, scout the right side and tell me what you see, then rejoin" will work.

5. Keep a level head. Once the bullets start flying, many people will just abandon the plan and start running for cover. You, as a commander have to think ahead for this. Once you see what the enemy is doing, revise your plan instantly. If you are in a good spot, all you need to do is tell them to hold where they are. If you need to reposition, do it quickly.

6. Do your best to keep the team informed. Don't just tell them to hold back for no reason. When the other team starts to push, call out a target for focus fire. If you aren't firing, you should have your head in the map, relaying orders.
**That isn't to say you should completely ignore what is happening, but you should be constantly monitoring the battle**

These are all general rules to get you through the battle. There are different tactics for each map, countless in fact. For example:

Canyon: *will work for either side of the map, to some extent*
  • Send your lights to scout the left or right (cap one of the points if conquest)
  • Assaults go towards the middle (with a clear view of the Theta area)
  • Once the scouts tell you stuff, they rejoin the group
  • Once you see what the enemy is doing, you send your assault lance to engage (not head on, but keep them occupied)
  • The fast attack lance then supports by either flanking, or just causing a distraction of some sort.
This is all just what I have found to work, and I'm sure there are plenty of people out there with better strategies.



Try it, chances are, people will be willing to follow your orders, ESPECIALLY if you seem to know what you're talking about.

People totally need to get into the role more often.
I have had some success, but by and large i find people do not listen or do not trust another person they dont know ;)
It be easier if there was Voip for PUGS ;)

Boils back down to how you talk to them, and if they think you'll lead them right...

I have been having some success with this. They won't always respond to planning. But often will respond to things like "Regroup" "Stay Together" "Focus Fire on ___" Sometimes you just need to remind people not to run up by themselves and commit suicide.

I would love to see more people take advantage of the commander role, and more groups willing to stick as a lance.

I've been taking command quite a lot recently and found that it works well. Maybe its because i'm grouped with higher ELO players who play a bit more seriously.

I usually start off the match with something basic like '3line flank' and then drop the move markers on the battlegrid. Would love to see a global command for the whole team instead of just lances.

Feels great to get a thank you for being a good commander at the end.

There was another command discussion not too long ago. Good to see it is getting some interest. I agree with most of the points here. I'll repeat a few things I have said before on the matter:

If you are nervous, try commanding your lance first. Becoming a Lance Commander means you only have to worry about 4 mechs instead of 8. You can also make life easier on the main Commander, if there is one.

Less is more. Commanding is not a full time job. Typing small essays or placing orders every 15-30 seconds will hinder your performance once the shooting starts.

Call targets. Focus fire wins games. You have the luxury of a more noticable chat color. Call the targets by the letter above their head when targeted. "E Atlas" is ideal, since now they know what chassis it is as well and this cannot be confused with a grid location (E6)

Listen to your team. Teamwork is vital and listening is a big part of that. Scouts often shout enemy locations. Players can occasionally give hints ( "Take cover, LRMs", "Tagging B" ect).

Finally, not all plans are good. Some people are quick to complain but it is often easy to see who justified. Use your judgement. "WTF noob order?" is probably worth ignoring. "we cant it's too open" probably has a point.

This ties in closely to what was said about how you talk to people. Not everyone is going to listen or be respectful. But as a commander you might well be first person to speak in a match. You set the tone regardless. You may end up having to be the 'bigger person'. One flaming ***** is enough. If the commander is reduced to hurling insults too orders aren't going to be followed one way or the other.

some good points there, definately agree with the 'no essays' point. When the bullets start fly you don't want to spend a long time (seconds) reading the order. Just 'cata next' and 'focus atlas' will do.

I often find if you don't communicate no one else will, you've got to get it started. Otherwise you just all wander off at random and we get stomped. Gotta use them comms!

Had a funny game the other day, I gave the order 'spider scout sigma pls' and the reply was 'im dead already bro'. ha, o well nevermind!
