XL255, all upgrades and slap in a ML and AC2. You should squeeze in at least 2-3 tons of ammo easy and still have armour.
You should get around 300 damage per game.
Mine is at 75 games played and average of 270 damage. It dropped recently thanks to HSR issues, a few patches ago it was over 300. Positive KDR and WL. Tried the MG version but not as fun.

I just finished running through basic with the 5K this morning.
XL245
1ERLL in the CT
4MG + 2 tonnes ammo
Max JJ
Double HS
As much armor as I could cram on.
Wasn't as bad as everyone says. I'd have preferred a ERPPC or PPC over the ERLL but it wouldn't fit in the CT. ERLL does just fine though. 4MGs are great as soon as some armor is stripped. Took out many many arms, legs, engines and torsos.
Basic tactic was to sit back behind the main line. Keep the ERLL firing as often as possible on the distracted enemy mechs. Wait until everyones forgotten about you and then move in and flank with lasers. Strip all the weapons and away you go.
It's not easy, especially if you're heavy friends go down early. But it is achievable.

In a fit of masochism (and wanted to test the new MG buff) I put my XL255 back in to my 5K and took it for a run. Since I wanted to see how much damage MGs along could do, the Energy Hardpoint had TAG in it and I discovered 2 things:
1) The match maker system hates lights with TAG. It will actively put you on teams with no LRMs while the other team will have LRMs, but no mechs with TAG (unless the LRM mech happens to have brought TAG for itself).
2) MGs are better, but they're still essentially confetti cannons. My best match I managed to do 137 damage. In another I managed to finish off two weakened mechs (yes, that's right, 2 kills in a Spider-5K, I expected the universe to end), but it still took a staggering amount of work to actually do the last tiny bit of damage required to take out their engine.
Ultimately, I think MGs could have their damaged double again (to 0.2 damage) and they'd still be underpowered. Their role as 'crit-seekers' is pretty much useless since they never actually seem to crit anything, and the things more important to crit, Engine, Gryo & Actuators, can't currently be crit'ed.
So what to do with the 5K? Buy it, Basic it, Basic the other Spiders, drop GXP to get the elites and unlock the Master efficiencies, then sell it (since these days you have to Elite efficiencies on three variants before you can unlock the Master...I learned that the hard way and had to rebuy a 2nd 5K so I could get the extra module slot on my 5D & 5V.
