Their should be an option for target to lock on to the mech closest to the cursor. This is an important for competitive play to increase target acquisition and the rate at which info can be relayed to the team.
To elaborate more clearly (since that confuses me a bit but I cna't think of better wording)
In MW4, their were two options for target lock on (not including reverse): a cycle based on order seen and a button to lock on the mech under the reticle.

Doesn't it already target the closest mech to your reticle?

I believe the OP is talking about both. Having the target under reticle, targeting nearest target, and another button for cycling order seen.
Basically adding other button presses (the part that makes Mech Warrior games 'sim-esque') as options for 'ways' to target.

It does not target the mech closest to your reticle, or at least doesn't for me. I find the targeting behaviour to be erratic and frustrating, and agree with OP; usually I am looking at what I want to target. But it is not uncommon for me to be looking straight at something, hit r, and have the game cycle back and forth between two or three targets that are not even on-screen, flatly refusing to target what is near my crosshair until I look away and back or move. Sometimes it seems like it targets the closest mech, but this isn't consistent. Honestly, I have no idea what the logic behind this is, most of the time.

It targets the closest Mech to your reticule. The only time this is an issue is when there are three or more Mech's bunched up, makes it hard to pick the specific target you want.
Never had a single instance of it picking a random target that I didn't have my crosshairs either close to or placed directly over.

You should also auto target the first target detected if you do not currently have a target. Until you manually acquire a target it should continue to target the first available target you detect. Make it an option you can toggle on or off. Make it on by default.
A agree on the point above, though. Target under reticle and cycle next enemy target should be 2 separate actions.
