i am a noob and im still trying different control setups like
wpn/rudder+mouse
joystick+mouse
wpn/rudder+joystick
so far my aim is horrible,i was wondering for my 1st mech should i look at more torso weapons than arm weapons, ive seen a mech i think where i can do lasers on the torso and missle on the arms, would this help me aim better as i get a feel for the game?

Not necessary to do that. Enable the Arm lock option in the client on the left hand bottom side of the options screen and you are done.

You can override the locked arms then in game if necessary by pressing default left shift. I find unlocking arms on some Mechs (Flame) allows me to aim more quickly at fast moving targets such as lights, but I have all my armament on the arms. Other mechs such as the Jenner do not benefit from that, but the Commando does, as it has independently moving arms

Save the Cadet Bonus for the first 25 games in order to buy your first mech. Do not experiment that bonus away. You should get about 8 or 9 Mill if you save it all.

Stay away from the lightest mechs in each bracket as a newb. They are all harder to play without some experience under your belt. (Example again here the Dragon)

mainly it's about practice. Getting used to the separate reticles and such. My preferred control method is a joystick to control the legs and mouse to control torso/arms. This also puts a lot of buttons immediately at my disposal. As for the first mech. Play with the trials for a bit if you haven't already. They mostly suck but they give you an idea of how some of the mechs pilot. I would suggest staying away from assaults and lights right at first. Lights are fragile and assaults tend to be priority targets so your surviveability is low in both those.

Beyond that it really depends on your play style. For example, I am a terrible sniper but within 300 meters I rarely miss a shot so I tend to move towards mechs and weapons that are better for close range.

As for missiles on arms and laser on the torso. I find that to be....confusing. The arms feel more reactive to me so having missiles there tends to throw me off, unless they are srms which are kinda worthless right now. Again, it comes down to what is comfortable for you. Thankfully the only way you get penalized for experimentation in this game is by loss of time.

So experiment away. Half the fun of this game is finding the right build.

Just remember getting your first mech is the biggest decision you will make in MWO.

From the way it sounds, Blackjack, Jagermech, and Stalkers would all suit your taste. Cant lose the arm reticle if it only move up and down haha.

What kind of weapons do you like to use? I find that starting a mech build works best if you have a theme in mind, like how much firepower you want to bring, or how much speed you are looking for, then build around that.
