Every few games I run into an opponent that can accurately shoot me with er ppc from ranges where I can't see them. I can see the point of origin for the ppc shot, but they aren't even a spec over there.
So I figure there must be some graphics settings that allow optimization of distance viewing?

Graphics Settings?

Apparently the secret is low specs, but i wouldn't know because i can only run half my settings medium, and the other half low.
I can at least recognize a medium mech as it's chassis from about 1.25km on average. Sometimes longer in the clear airs of Alpine.

Not that I'd know of. It can however be extremely hard to spot some mechs. The Stalker, the Blackjack and the Catapult K2 can shoot out of cover with only minimal parts of the mech visible. When the distance is big enough and the background dark, it can be nearly impossible to spot them unless they start moving.
edit:
Low specs only decrease the render distance of objects, enabling people to see through trees and sometimes buildings. It does not increase the general spotting distance as far as I know.

also with a target lock you can shoot at something by inferring where it is within the target box, without even being able to accurately see the mech.
An enemy may be able to target you even if you cannot target him, either by use of spotters, enhanced sensor modules, or BAP.

High resolution. For example two people playing at different resolutions (one at 800x600 and the other at 1600x1200), at the same distance and looking at the same target, the one with 800x600 might see a few dots. The one at 1600x1200 will see twice as much detail and make out that cluster of dots as being a miniature mech far out in the distance.
"Object Detail" affects not only the detail on objects but how far away it will allow them to appear at their lowest LoD.
SECRET!
But since I'm here I'll let you in on a secret. Night vision during the day. I'm serious. Let's say you have a target at 700 meters, and you're both on level ground. Since he's within 700 meters, he'll highlight with the night vision's "glow." But since the nearest wall is beyond 750 meters, the background behind him is black.
Green against black. BAM. He's got no chance.
Example. Set this video to 720P and fullscreen it. It first demonstrates what Redshift said (infer targets based on the target box). Then later as I come back around, you can see the glowing mech secret I mentioned. (Btw, the AC/2s fired there are NOT using a macro).
You can just use thermal, but it's hard to see details with thermal and at that distance the mech is faded and almost black. With night vision he glows and you can see every detail, distinguishing arms and side torsos from center with ease.
Caustic valley, River City Day. Turn on night vision when you're in areas with lots of smoke. Smoke becomes almost invisible. Mechs glow against it. You can now shoot at things you couldn't see before. (Thermal works too for seeing through smoke though neither one should). Remember that Thermal doesn't always work for this. Night vision never fails.

Add ontop of that a large screen LCD TVs
. At times though I see barely an outline but an outline is all I need, and made easier by the pilot walking towards me.

I spend most my time in a light moving over 140 and never at an opponents face.
Good stuff guys. I cranked myself up to 1920 x 1080 and it does make a difference. Haven't had an invisible mech shooting at me in the last 5 or so games. Everything looks cooler too.

As it should. But not everyone can run the game at that resolution.
I'm limited to 1600x1200 by my monitor, and even then I have to drop down to 720P widescreen because I do youtube videos.

That is where all the fugly filters come in. Hardly anything more can be seen using my native resolution (2560x1600) than using "only" 1920x1200 (which I run when playing to keep things fluid).
