Minor nitpick: what is described in the article is not at all like a KF Drive - not all FTL drives are created equal.

The NASA concept, based on the work of one Dr. Miguel Alcubierre (with the original paper here), is more similar to Star Trek's "warp drive" in that is distorts "normal space"/"real space".
By contrast, the KF Drive is is described to work by (essentially) opening a portal into another spacial plane outside of "normal space" (that is, "hyperspace"), moving the ship through that, and opening a second portal back into "normal space".

Also, the companion articles:

(Incidentally, that may be part of why Federation starships have that massive deflector dish...)
Still, cool article, and thanks for sharing!

Edit: Hmm, can't find where I've read it. So I might be wrong about the 500t. Especially since some newer sources say it would be possible with much less. Still... Keep your eyes open for blue glowing pebbles repelling each other.

Current technology isn't quite in the right space.
However Gizmodo did a report on this regarding a possible crystaline fuel source scientests were working on and planing calling "Dilithium" in honor of Star Trek.

I just love that NASA is activly TRYING to develop a warp drive
though I would probably describe this as like a.... 'Slip Space' drive or something

Hell! If they're ever gonna testdrive it and I'm still alive, I'll beg them so long 'til they put me in there. I'll probably be an old man by then, so I don't care how many of my atoms eventually get there or anywhere. Just explode me for science.
