Only problem it has is the low hanging arms, but other than that just set up two firegroups with alternating AC/2s and go to town.
The 4X is insanely underrated.

Sadly it will always be slow as hell.

Positives:
It's got lots o ballistics
Has upper/lower arm actuators so you can aim your shots.
Arguably positive: It's got a missile port in the head and two laser spots in the chest for potentially good zombie time.
Negatives:
It's stupidly slow. I mean... slowest heavy in the game slow. It has a BEST speed equivalent to most assault mechs. Only without all the pluses of being an assault.
Low slung arms. At the time, it was the only mech in the game bringing 4 ballistic arm mounts to the fore; now it's competing with the jager, which can fire over hills with ease.
Upper/lower arm actuators - while this is good you can aim your shots... you can't mount an ac20 in the arms like a jager.
Ultra wide torso is a magnet for enemy fire, oh yeah and it stores all your ammo too. Play this mech and you'll become extremely familiar with the term "ammo explosion" on your death screen. Meaning you will never make it as far to find out how that zombie time works because you'll be blown to **** from at worst dying, at best having a CASE mitigated explosion result in half your mech being gone.
So:
It's slow
Poorly armored compared to comparably slow things
Hard to hit with over hills (due to it's low slung arms)
A walking bomb..
etc.
Stick with the 3D, Ilya, and 1x/2x. The 4x is a gimmick at best and a bad one at that.
Though I will say that I've run the aforementioned 2xlbx/srm4/etc build and prior to lbx/srm buffs it was enough to level it through basic. So I imagine that it might work, though there are invariably platforms that do it better.

AC5 Build
This one has a sustainable DPS of 10.3, which is on par with a 3x UAC5 Ilya Muromets.
If you want to use a standard engine the 1x is much better.
1X Gauss + Large Laser build.
More about firesupport aswell, swap to an AC20 for Brawling.

...
Why are you storing ammo in your side torsos?

I used to run a Streak + 1 Ton of ammo. Now I've got another ton of Gauss Ammo plus the AMS.

CTF-4X
Offense: 2 AC10 (4 tons ammo), 2 ML, SRM4 (1 ton), 12 heat sinks
Defense: st. 235 engine (54.4 km/h), 416 armor, AMS (1 ton)
Upgrades: DHS, Endo
place 4 tons of ammo in the legs, and 1 ton in each arm (none in the side torso's). some people forgo the AMS and opt for a standard 250 or 255 engine for more speed

You are definately not a brawler and best firing at a distance in support of one of your team mates doing the brawling. He'll think he's playing well when the arms of his opponant magically drop off as you hit him from over 500m away.
If and usually when you get noticed and you have to brawl you must keep your nerve and aim those gauss shots as they are still quite lethal at close range too.

Tons of damage, great range and no heat. You will dish out punishment non stop untill they try to take you out, and you expose yourself to way less risk compared to when boating AC20's. The respectable 15 damage alpha means you can take pot shots when you need, AC5's need higher uptime.
However 4x AC5 does more dps at almost the same range as a Dual Gauss.

4 AC5's were good fun on chain fire, LB10's had their moments but the gauss were very good. You have to assume your not going to be close in on the brawling and a magnet for LRM's, focus fire and those annoying mechs. But when you get going you can seriously put a crimp on someone day.
