The only thing bad about the Phoenix pack is that you know that come Jan., they are going to be selling the Clan pack for $80 and you will have to pony up again.

And...why...is that bad?

I've been here since closed beta. I opted out when they offered the Founders package, but I did get the Phoenix package. If they release a Clan package next year, I will gladly buy that too.

Why? Because this game is fun...and I support it. I expect games that I like to release new content. If games don't release new and interesting content, I often lose interest in the game and move onto other games.

So in my mind, there is nothing bad about the Phoenix pack. It's good for the game...and the franchise.

Its not worth it at all. Save your 80, buy Battlefield 4 when it comes out. That's a better use of your hard earned cash.... 80 bucks for 12 skins basically....

Why would I not spend money on a game I thoroughly enjoy to spend it on a game I have no desire to play coming from a franchise I have always ultimately been disappointed with?

I paid $60 for this game, and now they want another $80 so I can buy a slightly different variant that's supposed to resemble a mech I liked back in the TT days and play it in a game that doesn't resemble TT at all. Why? I can already do that in MW4 MekTek, and with REAL unseen designs. Who needs the MWO Battlemaster (as attractive as it is) when I can get a REAL Battlemaster in MW4? And a Marauder. And a Rifleman.

Don't I have better things to do with $80?

I certainly don't have anything better to spend my money on, considering I play this game about 20 hours a week. Even having put in $300 and having taken a couple months break it still is only costing me about 35 cents per hour of play. What else could I do for that kind of value?

Has this part been confirmed (sell-ability)? I asked, but got no answer.

Dollars per hour doesn't add up well for MWO. I spent $50 on Skyrim and Steam thinks I've played it for 433 hours. That's $0.11 per hour, and I'll never pay another dime. Or consider all the $1 mobile games or $10 indie PC games out there.

As for "nothing better to spend money on", that's a highly individual thing. How about $300 towards your mortgage? Towards retirement? Towards your kids college fund? I've got plenty of better things to spend money on than video games, but so long as the dollar amounts stay low I'm OK with it. But MWO dollar amounts are high, and they they're never-ending.

That's the problem with F2P: you're renting time with your cash, not buying a game. And $30 fora mech is pretty silly, especially when they're all becoming pretty cookie-cutter at the moment. They're just selling us hardpoints and torso/arm twist speeds now.

I imagine PGI thinks there are enough hardcore fans out there willing to spend $30 on a variant of some mech that is slightly more efficient at one particular job than another, but are those few people really worth more than the multitudes who would pay $2-5? I wish you luck, PGI... you won't be getting my money at these prices.

To all those that brought up HG in this thread and ownership of said mechs:

HG doesn't have a license for the mech designs themselves and never had. Their marketing license from Tatsunoko is limited by what the Japanese courts ruled in 2002 and in 2006. The Japanese courts ruled that Tatsunoko had the copyrights to the animation for Macross and Southern Cross, but the designs of the characters and mechs in those animations are owned by Studio Nue/Big West.

Also in 2002, Big West issued HG an injunction for blocking all things Macross into the United States. As part of the injunction, HG cannot create any new derivative works of the Macross and Southern Cross designs. This is why HG's Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles replaced the original characters with new ones and none of the new mechs are based on Macross/Southern Cross. The new mech designs are derived from Mospeada's mechs.

Now FASA had a shared license with Twentieth Century Imports over the art that was created by TCI for advertising purposes. TCI, from what can be ascertained, got their license from Big West/Studio Nue to import model kits based on various animations made by Big West/Studio Nue. A key thing about a shared license is that it directly connects FASA to Big West/Studio Nue since it puts FASA in the place of being an original party to TCI's licensing contract.

As it stands now, HG does not have a legal leg to stand on when you factor in the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. Under said convention, the United States and Canada are bound to abide by the copyright laws and decisions of the original nation where the work was created which is Japan. Since Japan already settled the matter of who owns what, all it takes is for PGI or Catalyst Games to take HG to court with their new licensing from Studio Nue/Big West for the art.

EDIT: The mechs in the Phoenix package didn't come from Macross or Southern Cross, so HG couldn't get involved anyway if PGI had used the original designs. The Locust came from Crusher Joe which is owned by Nippon Sunrise and Studio Nue. The rest of the designs came from Dougram which is owned by Nippon Sunrise.

I won't be buying this package because Alex didn't use the original designs, but the Reseen abominations, as the basis for his version.

- 2 other Locust variants (which can still be sold for C-Bills/component slaughtered after being mastered to get their mech bay)
- 3 Mech bays
so far, this is an assumption.
