I don't think the side torsos are as large as you guys say they are:
Of course there is some curving/transition between the front and side, and it will be possible to hit the sides of the mech, but keep in mind that the arms will be covering those up to a degree.

Shooting the red part (blue too, but that is smaller) will still count as frontal side torso, so yes they really are that big.
You missing the point. Every mech has the exact same config with the underarm being part of the side torso. What he is illustrating is that dead on from the front (how most people measure the side torso width) the side torsos are rather small.
Then you have to consider that unlike the concept art, the in game model of the SH will have the arms hanging in a "L" shape with the upper armor hanging straight down from the shoulder and the lower arm straight out at 90 degrees. This means that 90% to part shaded red will be protected from fire by the arm.
So the Right and Left torsos appear to actually be rather small. In fact this mech seems to break the mold and be rather narrow in general at least compared to the Centurion and Trebuchet, maybe even scaled like the Hunchback which is one of the few mechs scaled and proportioned correctly.
Now the only issue I really see is that because the CT is so narrow, that means alot of fire directed at the CT is going to naturally drift to the side torsos. It is this that is more concerning about the viability of the XL rather than the actual size that concerns me. Still on the other hand, since damage is going to be naturally spread over the entire torso, it might increase survivabilty.
