You can use this money to buy mechs, with $$$ you can buy mc with wich you also can buy mechs.
Some mechs, so called Hero Mechs, can only be bought with mc, notice they haven't any c-bill entries in the mechlab.
In your first games you get a boost in c-bills enough to be able to buy one mech after about 15 games. This was added for being able to own your very first mech very fast
No need to spend $$$ at all. Only if you want to support the developers (not a bad thing) or if oyu want special mechs, or, and this is the main reason, want to have more than 4 mechs, because you only have 4 mech bays.

All normal 'Mechs (not hero 'Mechs or Champion 'Mechs) have both an MC cost and a cost in C-Bills. You earn C-Bills from playing the game. The first 25 games you get a huge boost, the cadet bonus, which is worth 8 million C-Bills in total. I suggest you start playing the trial 'Mechs for 25 games - learning the maps and the 'Mechs, and save your money - then pick a chassis to begin with. I suggest something heavy (Stalker or Cataphract). Try and save an additional 1.5 million C-Bills to upgrade the heatsinks of your first 'Mech to doubles.
Most players would generally advise you not to buy a 'Mech with MC when you can buy it with C-Bills. Premium time and/or a Hero 'Mech may be a better investment in MC to accelerate your generation of C-Bills per game.

One moment....
And back!
Had to decide which mech of my 61 to sell in order to demonstrate this for you.
I call your attention to this picture. Specifically to the bottom right side.
- The price is for MC or cash.
- The price is for the in-game funds you earn by playing, called C-Bills.
- 201 which is not enough to buy the mech for .
- 1,914,838 which is enough to buy the mech for , so the option is available.
- Pretend it's like "Cash or credit." When you go to check out at the register you choose which way to pay for your merchandise.
- You will be asked to confirm the purchase either way, but do try to be careful. There are no refunds.
And my Cicada is now sad in the hands of some junkyard. Poor thing may never get to meet his little Locust brother. Ah well, time to go earn another one!

Locusts and Cicadas are both insects.

I just picked up this peach of a second-hand Cicada down in the junk yard. The guy running the place said some guy just dumped it with him after some kind of experiment - or public service video shoot. It works fine. I'll put it in my stable next to the space where my Locust is going to go.

Kon, which Cicada variant did you sell? I've been considering the M for the ECM module. I still only have the X-5 and kind of on the fence if I want to level up 3 variants or not. Hard to get excited about that chassis, not much firepower at all for a med and no JJ's. It's more like a tall Jenner with no ability to fly.

The 3C. I had finished with what I needed for it in the mech chassis introduction thingy anyway. Before the X-5, the 3M was my overall favorite and that was before the ECM (at the time it was the only variant that I could manage to kill things with. The others were too fast to put damage on enemies without the lag compensation Host State Rewind. The 3M I slowed down to stuff on a shotgun -- can't miss with a shotgun even with lag!) The 3M's a pretty good mech. Surprisingly enough it works better slower than faster, with a good sized autocannon attached.

As said by others in my stead, sold the Cicada. I choose the Commando as it was the only thing within my price range (actually had to sell several large lasers to get there, too) because I had just bought my 4th Atlas (Atlas D Founders, Atlas K, Atlas RS, Atlas D regular [for photoshoots comparing 'unique geometry with standard variants'], and will soon be getting my 5th the DDC).
