Hi all,
The first mech I got in MWO was the Cat K2, followed by the C1 and C4 to max out efficiencies. I'm now contemplating a move to another chassis. I've tried all sorts of builds on these three, including ERPPCs, Gauss, AC20, LLs, LRM/SRM boats etc.
I guess the question I have is, how do I avoid feeling that the next mech I get won't just be a reskin of the Cat? I mean the Cataphract 3D has the same ports as the Cat K2. Will all heavies etc feel alike or are there really unique quirks to each one like PGI has said?

Maybe try a different weight class? In terms of Heavies, the Cataphract and Jagermech can do more things with ballistic builds than the Catapult can, while the Quickdraw and Dragon move at high speeds. It's hard to suggest a new mech for you without knowing what you're looking for, what role you like to play, etc.

Well, I typically play as a medium to close range brawler and haven't had a lot of good times hanging back away from the battle so I guess I like to get up close. I've been contemplating getting out of my comfort zone and playing a different weight class, though I'd hate to waste my heavy weight class master efficiencies unlock. I'm open to any suggestions really,

There is one thing you should try: Arm movement
The Catapult, Jager, Raven, Blackjack, Stalker, Jenner, Cicade can't move their arms to the sides... a Centurion for example got it's main weapons on one arm, which makes it much easier to move and focus fire in a brawl.
Cataphract got the arm movement, but it's arm are really low compared to a K2, so popping up and shooting will take more time...
If you want to try it first, you should buy a Centurion... maybe AI, if you like LLs... or the A with a Gauss in the arm. It does not cost that much and you can use different builds, because of the good mix of different slots. (Zombie with 3x SRM and 2x ML?
)
PS: I only kept the Catapult A1, because I wanted a rocket mech... and most other mechs use the same weapons as a K2, so it does not feel that special for me...

In the heavies category the Dragons and Quickdraws have a completely different feel than the pult/jaeg/cata (which are all still different, but more similar to each other). I suspect if you haven't tried them you might find them a bit frustrating because you're expectations won't be completely reset. Going with a different weight class might be helpful.

Thanks for the responses, I did feel that the Jager/Cata/Cats actually closely resemble each other. Assaults are clearly different for being able to withstand more punishment, mediums faster etc but I might wanna try out a couple more heavy mechs. I'm thinking the Dragon or Quickdraw actually. Any good variants I should look out for?

If you're choosing between a Dragon or a Quickdraw, go with the Quickdraw. It has basically the same speed, but also jumpjet capable (which will come in very handy now that terrain restrictions are going to be put in). I'm pretty sure the 4H is the frontrunner for the Quickdraw. 4 energy slots, 3 missile slots. I currently run mine with a 350XL, endo, DHS, 4 medium laser, 2xSRM 6, 1xSRM 4. 44 damage Alpha to the back, then run away at 96kph.

The QD-5K has some good brawler builds posted in some threads here....it looks like a jumping, better armored Hunchback to me!
