Don't let him get the A1 if he hates missiles.

If grinding up three catapult variants is not a problem, the marvelous thing about the -K2 is that the stock build does work, if not at peak efficiency.

The K2 is a really good mech and it can carry ballistics in a decently small package since XL engines are almost without drawback on it. If he really doesn't like missiles though it may not be the ideal mech as others have pointed out though it can be workable.

If he were to go down the cat route my suggestion would be in the first instance a cat K2 with Dual UAC5, Dual Llas, dual Slas and an XL280

The cat C4 can be run with 3xLlas and 2xSRM6 or two PPC, 2Mlas and whatever SRMs fit weight wise for a fairly competent allround mech without being missile heavy.

Next version will be trickier though as the only two left are the one with 6x missile hard points or 4x missile and 2x energy but both those energy are located in the centre torso. The streak kitty will not play like most missile mechs though and while pretty lame it could be a way around his hate of missiles.

Two gauss and 4 med lasers. I consistently get around 5, 6 hundred damage and at least a few kills. Takes a bit of practice, but I can hit runing scouts from several hundred meters. I rarely miss the bigger mechs.

K2 works great as a solid platform, like many others if you buddy doesn't want to play missles, he should look for another chassis though.

Recommendations:
1) Jaegermech (lots of ballistics and energy combos with few missle hardpoints)
2) Stalker, if he likes lots of energy. No ballistics (except Misery hero mech) hardpoints. But the arm hardpoints are mounted like shoulder cannons which means less shots clipping the top of a 1/2 mech height building.
3) Cataphract more ballistics and energy slots

Good luck and have fun!

-S
