If you use one, that is. I tried Fraps but it crashed my game and gave me a lot of bugs. Not even close to approaching my CPU capacity. But crashes the game.

What other options are there? Is it possible to just generically record the entire desktop as it's happening?

MSI Afterburner is phenomenal and completely free. In addition to taking video (with lots of quality options) you can use it to take screenshots, monitor your frames per second, overclock and monitor your GPU - long story short it's pretty effing fantastic and, again, completely free. I use it myself and highly recommend it.

Fraps if I want to record myself.
MSI Afterburner if I'm recording footage of things to use in other programs later. MSI seems to be a pain when it comes to recording yourself as it separates audio channels.

Fraps is good to monitor frames or take screens, but for the video capture bandicam (it doesn't hurt your fps at all) or MSI AB are fairly better

I use MSI Afterburner.
I also use XSplit Broadcaster for streaming on twitch.tv
but it can also record locally.
There is a free version but I find the prices cheap enough
to get a better licensed version.
Besides, you never know when you will want to actually stream.
I have found it fun while PUGing alone.

I use FRAPS.

It may not be the best, but it's simple to the extreme.

You just have to remember to STOP recording BEFORE leaving the battle window, otherwise you CTD.

Weird, I don't have that issue with fraps.
I still use version 3.2.2 Build 11496.

Maybe it is any help: I run MWO and Fraps both as admin.
But besides that I have no clue what is causing this crash on your side or if that crash is the norm and me is only for weird reasons lucky.

Fixed Scarface's link to give English.

That issue relates more with MWO and resolution changes. Mechwarrior online and fraps do not handle resolution changes too well when it comes to certain resolutions (particularly 720 resolutions). Especially when it comes to a wide screen resolution on a 4:3 screen.

You can mix that **** into 1 channel.

2.3.1 afterburner crushes everything else just on the basis of audio control, file size, video control, and the fact that it's free. used fraps a lonnnnnnng time [2005ish?] and it's just not cutting it these days for me.

I had that set up, and I get this really awful sounding lag and squelch and god knows what else if I do it through Afterburner.

So what I did instead was record with afterburner without splicing the two tracks together since it gets corrupted if I do, used Handbrake to convert the video with the second channel, and then AVS video editor and changed it into an mp3, then windows movie maker to splice them together, and then handbrake to make a final compression for it to be youtube worthy... and that's just too much work.

So I settled for fraps. I use afterburner to record scenic vids for something along the last remnant style movies.

I am using VirtualDub to capture videos. It is free.

http://www.virtualdub.org/

It has digital and analog capture capabilities. It supports both DirectShow & Video for Windows capture.

Then AppGeeker video converter to convert to other file format.

http://www.ilikemall.com/

By far, I have been reasonably satisfied with them.

I stream with open broadcasting software. Twitch.tv makes recordings of my streams. I think can highlight certain parts and have it uploaded to their site and to youtube.
