I bought my desktop retail, and I want to have my windows 7 installation on a ssd(from my old hdd). I still have the original case with the windows 7 product key code. If I were to download the win 7 iso from microsoft, could I use that code to set it up on the new ssd?

Will This Work?(Os Question)

check with your desktop maker to see if you can get the OEM disc
you can't use the iso from Windows and use back your original product key
usually the iso from windows is a bare ver while the OEM ver from your desktop maker have all the required drivers and software
unless you want to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8 then you could use the iso direct from Windows with their new product key

Maybe not. Windows registers the serial to your hardware, you may need to call Microsoft and verify. I've done it often enough.

Windows 8 has downgrade rights to Windows 7 last I checked so you should be able to just install windows 7 with your windows 8 key.
