Because of the cowards that fill the ranks of pug groups, the people who take ridiculously slow engines for heaven-knows-what-reason, and to help the fatties up inclines .

You forget about the tactical applicatins of preventing a Spider from getting away. I KNOW I hate it when those little speedy freaks jet away at 131 kph and i am only doing a top speed of 50 kph. Latch on so you can ALPHA strike them for show (not that it is required) and send their meat chunks flying in all directions. TACTICS PEOPLE - read some Sun Tzu for goodness sake

OK. Take away the only defence of a light mech.... Not the best idea in the world! Use Streak SRMs and pray ECM isn't a problem!

You are right - the little ones need speed to survive, but darn if it was not a nice dream while it lasted

"Harpoon SRMs: A maritime hunter’s weapon not designed for the battlefield, the SRM harpoon is the heaviest of its kind. Essentially little more than a kinetic, piercing head and a reinforced, detachable cable, the SRM-launched harpoon can pierce the hide of most any marine animal known in the Inner Sphere, and tow the hapless - and, hopefully, mercifully dead - creature into the vessel. While they can be quite effective against unarmored infantry, battlefield armor is effectively immune to the standard harpoon SRM, and most vehicles or ’Mechs could make quick work of the tow cable even if successfully speared."
(TechManual, pg. 230)
TT already came up with harpoons, and already indicated that harpoons by themselves were useless against 'Mech armor.
The BattleMech Taser, on the other hand, would be more useful... but it doesn't come into being until 3065, and even then isn't much seen outside of the Solaris arenas.
