FASA was great for that for games they made. A tabletop game with minis and a role-play game also, with lots of material to use for both. They did it for Battletech, Star Trek, and the Renegade Legion lines. Whats the current year in the battletech universe, like 3150, so its spanned over 100 years with material, and material to go back to Original Star League. 25 years and going strong!

Exactly - with the right kind of book - you can play scenarios were the first Mechs stalk the battlefields ´~ end of 2500 up to 3145-3150 where everything has changed.
