These are the old lasers:
Small: 0.5 tons, 1 critical slot, 1 heat, 3 damage, 90 range
Medium: 1 tons, 1 critical slot, 3 heat, 5 damage, 270 range
Large: 5 tons, 2 critical slots, 8 heat, 9 damage, 450 range

I propose a new laser type "Big" to span the gap between Medium and Large in terms of tonnage and other stats:
Big: 3 tons, 2 critical slots, 6 heat, 7 damage, 360 range

Since Big uses two Critical spaces, like Large, instead of 1.5 and has a smidge more Heat than one might expect by 0.5, maybe its Range could be pushed out to 375 to compensate.

This would help loadout decisions for lighter 'Mechs.

not canon and would cause mass hysteria among the table top purists.

Op,

Basically what you are suggesting is this -

Posted Image
Light PPC

5 Heat
5 Damage
3 tons
2 Crits

With a PPC Capacitor Equipped, for one extra ton and extra crit, it can do up to (between 5 and 10):

10 Heat
10 Damage

I'd say that's pretty good for something in between :(. Although, not a laser, it'll still be pretty nice as the 'middle-weight between medium and large lasers.

Light PPC has the same range profile as a regular PPC. So it does not quite fit. It does fit as the "small laser" of the PPC family though.

More focused on the idea presented. The "Big" class laser does not fit well into the laser system. The smalls are more of afterthought or light 'Mech style weapon. The mediums were the most versatile with the best damage to weight ratio and range to weight ratio. The damage potential offered by your idea really does not justify the tonnage or critical costs. The heat output is also prohibitive to the weight cost. If you put one on a 'Mech you will probably just upgrade to a large laser once all is said and done with heat sinks. Probably why FASA and Catalyst never put in a laser like that themselves.

Remember, just because there is a weight gap within a weapons group, it does not mean the gap need actually be filled. It is probably already filled by the next smaller weapon in one way or another.

Yeah, Magic 8 Ball predicts: No "Big Laser" in the future.

However you do have ER Pulse Mediums to look forward to, if you're a clanner.

Talk about a laser weapon larger than the large laser and no mention of the Binary Laser Cannon/Blazer? For shame.

OP wants a weapon that's in between a Medium and a Large.

I suggested ER Medium Pulse (which comes out 7 years from now):

Heat: 6
Damage: 7
Weight: 2 tons
Slots: 2

Well yeah, but he said "big." Have to mention the Blazer then!

In all seriousness, asking for a Medium-Large laser seems to be unnecessarially splitting hairs to me. Sure, ERMLs are coming for the Clans within the lifetime of the game, but they're not really what the OP is looking for.

Good catch. The features I'm going for here are 1. range, 2. loadout. 'Mechs under 35 tons should be able to select from more than machine gun, small laser, and medium laser. While this is not canon, neither are restrictive hard points. What's wrong with a Bristlehog 50 ton 'Mech maxed out with machine guns, ammo, and CASE?

think the name needs to be different, cause big and large are basicly the same :)

how about extra light large laser or reduced range large laser.

my jenner mounts an ERPPC and it tends to be very effective.

But, but House Fukushima made itself known after leaving their mark in the wake of a daring raid on the site of an ancient weapons cache. Then their drop ship extracted and fled back into "ungoverned" space.

if you can't find something in the ER, pulse or ER Pulse range of lasers, there will also be heavy lasers at some point. Plus all the light/med/heavy variants + capacitors MW4 had.

I've no idea how many of the MW4 weapon are canon, I think a lot of it looks like they made it up but meh maybe all that (inc ~ 5 machine gun variants) are canon now? I could certainly see a lot of them left out completely as they didnt add much to gameplay.

No. Do I have to get Steve Corell YouTube video of him going no for you to make it clear? There are no BIG Lasers. Never have been, never will be, end of story. It's not canon, not even for Clan weapons.
