I used to crash to desktop and get this error often. The more I played the worse it got. After alot of searching and no feedback from the dev's I finally found a thread where someone had some suggestions. He/She said to turn down the texturing to low in the advanced video settings. I did this and no game crashes. I turned the texturing up to medium, played for a couple of hours today and still had no crashes. So this has seemed to solve my problem at this point.

Monitor: 25 inch
Setting: 1920 by 1080
Processor Model : AMD Phenom™ 9850 Quad-Core Processor
Speed : 2.5GHz
System : Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. M78SM-S2H
Chipset AMD (Family 10h) Athlon64/Opteron/Sempron HyperTransport Technology Configuration
Video System Adapter : ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (512MB, PCIe 2.00 x16, PS3.0, VS3.0)
Logical Storage Devices Hard Disk (C:) : 84GB (NTFS) @ OCZ-AGILITY3 90GB (SATA600, NCQ)
Network Adapter : NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller - Packet Scheduler Miniport (Ethernet, 1Gbps)
Operating System(s) Windows System : Microsoft Windows XP (2002) Home 5.01.2600 (Service Pack 3)

Hope this can possibly solve other peoples issues as well.

Edit: I turned the texturing up to medium it was initially set at High. So taking the texturing off high worked.
