It seems there is a feature which allows your team commander to set rally points, etc. Is there a guide on this? It sure would help those random PUGs if someone was directing the battle.

I don't know of any guide to this but it is pretty straightforward to use.

First, press "b" to bring up the large map. Next click on "Take Command" at the top left corner (only 1 commander at a time I believe). You can then issue orders by clicking (right clicking?) on the map at the location you want the order and selecting the order from the list that appears. Right now I think you are limited to a single order at a time.

As commander you will also have any text to your team be listed in yellow and stating that you are the commander.

You can stop being commander by going to larger map and clicking the "Resign Command" button in the same place you took command. Also, when you die you no longer have command.

Hope that helps get you a start.

Sadly so far, it is an underutilized resource. It would be Awesome if people would pay attention in PUGS but they rarely do. Premades have more potential use out of it, but tend to relay most of the information vocally.

This is sad, because the tools there are actually pretty nice, and I understand that PGI plans on expanding them with command style modules.

It needs more of a heads up display impact. If i can see the waypoint, along with attack/defend/support etc, that would be a lot more effective...

I agree. It will be surely improved, but it's not a priority feature atm.

Unless the commander tells you or you open the map, there's no way to know a command has been placed on the map.

I have perhaps been in three matches with active Commanders on the field.
Faster than typing, but still nothing to be compared to voice command...

Actually, at this time, A Command shows up on your Compass. Depending on the order, the display will show an additional RED square or gold one (there may be another colour that is utilized as well).

This feature, while somewhat useful now, will be part of the Community Warfare column of the game. The very basics are there and can be used. In the future, team mates MIGHT receive XP for completed orders. This is Beta and we may see may changes to this as the game matures and additional features come on line.

Right now, it is a good tool for Attack here, defend here commands if and when followed and then sometimes, the commander just gives the wrong order

The problem with the order system is that is is just not... complex enough. You can't assign more than one order, so if you want to split your lance and flank the enemy, you're out of luck if you want to communicate that through the commander function.

Its main problem is ..most people dont even seem to notice it and if they do, they ignore it (mostly)
If you take command you run the risk of verbal abuse, if you get it wrong.

I agree it is a bit basic. Maybe if it was improved a bit with maybe some sort of xp bonus for giving and following commands.
An "affirmative/Neg" button would help

tbh, i feel that pugs are happy if someone takes command and the majority of players follow the commander. Even if they think they have a better idea, most people agree, that it is better to follow a bad plan than everyone fighting allone.

Noob/pug here. I seldom lost a fight where someone used the command interface. It is great to organize pug hordes. We start running around like chickens WITH heads. :P

I have used this feature with limited success. The changing of your text to gold letters lets newer players recognize your commands easier. Use it respectfully and responsibly and your team might accept your leadership.

I agree that there needs to be an update to the HUD to people don't have to bring up the big map.

Also what does the command console do?

In PUGS players are begging for some direction, so I recommend veteran Mech pilots to take the lead. You know the choke points, and the potential flanking moves. Help guide your scouts to provide targeting info for your LRM boats. Direct them to scout for flanking moves. A little direction will go a long way, especially against pre-mades. This will take a little of their advantage away.

Also it is possible that PGI might be looking into other ways to improve team coordination like native support for voice coms. Like the much mentioned World of Tanks where people can enable in game voice, and hear the commander issuing voice commands.

New players need to Jump on One of the Teamspeak ip's hosted by people for this game. There they will learn how Using Battle commander is a waste of time when you can use your voice and join the 24th Century+ in combat.

If it ever does, me would like it to be a toggleable option.
Me dislike seeing floating glowing holograms cluttering my viewscreen.

I was told I was crazy back in the day when I cried MW4 needed a command position to set glowing way points on the screen for pilots to follow directions. I've played command quite a few hours in BF2142 and I think it would be awesome if more control like that was given.

In BF 2142 you can utilize base items which can be destroyed by enemy fire and repaired from the command console. These give you radar and the ability to point out enemy targets to other teammates, send resources, UAV’s and other fun things. You gain a bonus for commanding and the better your team does the more you receive.

In BF the commander can hide out in the control room of the teams titan ship. While I don’t think we should be invincible... well I guess a good pilot could hide and shutdown to command.

I think it's largely underutilized because only a small percentage of players visit the forums, let alone actually reads the guides. This game sorely needs an in-game tutorial to include all the basics like movement, targeting, penalties, up to command. The videos provided just aren't good enough for everyone. A lot of folks need the hands-on experience.

Well, just my thoughts on the subject is all... ;)

Yes there is: in your compass reading (your HUD), an additional yellow symbol shows you (for example) the direction to find the place your commander said to be defended.

I've noticed a "command console" in the list of equipment able to be purchased. What exactly does this do?
