What I find hilarious is the fact that many of you seem to think that if pin-point alphas were fixed and heat manipulated that everything would be peachy keen... and all would be right with the world.
Reality is players be they elite players or your run-of-the-mill PPC fodder... In the absence of the EPPC/PPC being the apex weapon, players who wish to be competitive will simply migrate to the next highest apex weapon...
We saw it with the LRMS, with the Slas -4P boat, with the SSRMs, with the Splat Cats, Gauss Cats, Highlander, poptarts...etc..etc...etc...
It's human nature to seek the biggest stick to beat upon thy enemy... Oh, we can wax poetically about canon builds, franken'mechs, stock mechs etc... But they are idealistic at best. But at the end of the day, if you wish to succeed and win, you are going to bend to convention and seek the path of least resistance to defeating your enemy.
Want to point a finger at when things got out of hand?... IMHO you don't have to look any further than when we gained the ability to group weapons in CB. As soon as we were able to fire 3 or more high-damage output weapons at a single point with one mouse button... things went to hell in a handbasket. An alpha strike is "supposed" to be all-weapons... not just the choicest ones.
Weapon groups + pin-point convergence = imbalance.
