One of the things that bothers me about MWO is that the MechLab uses Mech construction rules to handle customisation. The construction rules were introduced in TT to allow a player the freedom to make whatever design his fevered imagination could conceive - as if the player had a Mech factory assigned to him.

Now, the problem is that we are not building our Mechs from the blueprints upwards. We have no factories of our own. We are merely taking a factory fresh design and stripping the equipment out. Then we bolt in tons and tons of new weapons and off we go!

This process must surely be less efficient than if the Mech had been designed that way from the ground up. The gyro balance would be all off, and extra parts would be needed to bolt and connect and link up the new hardware. In short, you would have new stuff in your chassis, but you would be able to fit less usable stuff than was originally there.

MY PROPOSAL: An across-the-board weight tax on refitted modules. The exact penalty could we ironed out, but if it was 10% we would see fewer cheesebuilds on the battlefield.

The MechLab would still be useful and fun, but would be more of a customisation interface and less of a complete rebuild feature.

What do you guys think? Flame away! :)

interesting idea, but really, I'm just fine with the way that it already is.

we dont build them from scratch we put weapons in existing hardpoints,if we could move hardpoints or change them with a penalty i might agree but some mechs loadouts just make me think 'why would i buy that?'
if you could make whatever design you could imagine you wouldnt have to buy a misery for a ballistic hard point.
