I've seen a lot of straining with new content as to whether or not it will be canon to "Battletech" whatever the **** that is. This needs to be dealt with. At some point, PGI needs to ask themselves, are we going to be canon or not, and then start making content from there, not half-assing it like they are now.
There are also some other options. Say there were some new planets discovered with new technology. Maybe some aliens show up with cool new toys. Whatever. The point is, they just need to determine whether the community wants it to be canon or not. There is no active Battletech watchdog looking over their shoulder to ensure they follow the storylines correctly. For myself, I just joined this game because I saw robots shooting each other and I like designing weapons systems and doing clan warfare and such. I don't see why there is a need to follow a board game from 20 years ago for a MMOFPS today that people pay money to. Just decide if it needs to be canon or not, and then work from there, based on the preference of the community.

It is the history of MechWarrior that makes it what it is today. The majority of hard-core MechWarrior's out there (my self included) don't see it (and are loathed to refer to it) as a game; it has dominated our lives for a very long time. The concept of canon refers to the universe that MWO is set in, its structure and the all important timeline; its the rulebook which is based on the core principles of Battletech and without it MWO would just be another Hawken.
One look at the survey, which was conducted around December / January to discover when people joined MW, and you will see that most MechWarrior's (Myself, not included) took up arms with MechWarrior 2; in 1995, see:

That's a lot of history and puts many of the MechWarrior's out there in their 40's and 50's (Some are even older). It also means that they respect the MW universe for what it is and resent the idea of change.

Battletech is the reason this game has half the player base it does. Its the reason they keep making Star Wars games, the brand name alone ensures a profitable sale amount.
Change it too much from Battletech, and what would be the point? I can find dozens of online match based multiplayer games out there, but not one based on Battletech.

Yeah, and while we're at it, let's add Light Sabers to the Star Trek movies. Light sabers are cool and should be in everything!

So you see no problem with the current situation of implementing non canon material but then not implementing other stuff because it's not canon? It's just a bad thing for a game, especially a free-to-play that depends on continued community support. And they need to decide if they want to cater to Battletech fans or casual gamers, they can't do both.
