For question one, no. Just, no. The opportunity for trollish abuse is too large.

For question two, yes, but they're already doing this with UI 2.0.

why no? the same thing can already be done with player names. this isn't any different, just use a basic word filter like the forums use.

Well, my HBK 4H is called "Fukov"...

I'd never enable 'Mech nicknames to be public. And I don't care what yours is called. Just keep it as it is, there are far more critical features in the game that have to be fixed, improved, balanced etc. Do that first, and maybe later next year we can think about things, like having nicknames public.

Hey, I never said this was a pressing issue. I don't really care when it happens, lol.

no it really isn't. i have seen plenty on these forums who don't do anything beyond reading the title (and in some cases misinterpreting that too).

I already don't really read the name of the player that I'm targeting, mainly because it doesn't come up as instantly as "A" or "B" does for instance. I really think that once a team ID's a mech pilot and mech chassis it should instantly bring that up the next time it is targeting by anyone on the team just as it instantly brings up "A" or "B" target designation.

Then maybe we can talk about letting players name their mech the "DildoMachine".

I read the player names at the start of each match to see if:
a. I recognize anybody from previous matches
b. the other team has any fellow goons
c. there are funny names
d. there are any horrendously stupid names

b and d result in me trying to talk my team into prioritizing killing that person over actually winning the match. I only really pay attention to names after the match starts insofar as it advances this goal.

Would I like to be able to see/share mech names? Sure. But it's pretty much the bottom of the priority list. Mechs should definitely be re-nameable (and will be in UI 2.0).

If it were all up to me, I like systems where the level of censorship is adjustable. I'd have it so the user would be able to choose publically visable mech names and player avatars, and there would be an option in game to control whether they're shown. It would default to off. This way the people who want a more sanitized experience can get it, while everyone gets a bit more leeway.

censorship is too much work, where do you draw the line? E.g. is ***** okay, but not ****?

boobies, i guess that didn't work. pen15.

it is already done on the forums. just have players send out reports and expand the spelling checker as needed. the same thing can already be easily done with player names since this is free to play.

I get your point that deciding where the line should go can be a challenge, and it's easy to make a system that's...overly conservative, but I don't understand what you mean by "too much work." We're not exactly talking about unexplored territory here. You use regular expressions to find swear words, racial slurs, etc, matching whole words so you don't get assassinate turning into buttbuttinate. Then you let the report feature handle creative misspellings, portmanteaus (eg Adolf Shitler), and things that are offensive for reasons other than obscene words (see previous example). You don't show custom graphics at all unless they're enabled by users, and again let reporting handle anything truly obnoxious.

Sidenote: I like filtering systems that replace words with non-offensive words, even if they're not at all synonyms, just so you can figure out what was said and posts aren't left totally meaningless. Something Awful has a word filter for users that aren't logged in where f--- becomes "gently caress" and s--- becomes "poo poo." Way back in the day the official Elder Scrolls forums changed a-- to "spotted owl" and s--- to "wankle rotary engine."

A while back I read about Chat Roulette trying to implement a system that detected naked people, intended to stop pervs from using the service to expose themselves to random strangers. They forgot to test it with black people.

Yes.

Because it would be fun to see what goofy things people name their mechs.

I would vote yes, with the caveat that players should be allowed to report names like "BuggerYou" or such with offenders being forced to rename their mechs.

we should treat it just like they do for player names. with free to play there must be some kind of system for dealing with player names.

While it would be nice to show mech nick names I think the risk is to great. Sides, there is enough abuse in the game as is. Why give trolls another weapon?

Well instead of the name and variant number....could be the name of the mech and 3 letters for the name of the new variant....since it have been modified or the name of the mech and the name of the variant.

The reason for keeping the model abbreviation + number is so that people who are locked on can still see what mech variant you're using.
