If you still like the Light playstyle, you might want to check out "The X" Hero Cicada. It might technically be a Medium sized Mech, but those Cicadas are really just beefier Lights. They can keep up all but the fastest Lights, really.

The 280 is not a waste if you grind your mechs to Speedtweak, but if not then it was a bit expensive.

Well wait so I already got all my basic skills for the K done, I can still sell it after I get the F and D up to elite level right? Dangit this means I gotta buy like.......5 mech bays also if I want to invest in a medium and a hero and thier variants.

You may.
Keep in mind that they might add more skills/more skill tiers at a later date. Then you will have to buy the K variant all over again.

I don't know if it's been said -- I really only see a lot of advice here -- but I'd like to add that it's not possible to screw yourself over, exactly. So you made a buying/selling decision you regret, and you might have to get a few more C-bills before your next big purchase. Big deal. A week later, you'll have forgotten about it.

Scrotacus... I'm a bit over 2 months into the game. I only JUST gave PGI $15. I bought 8 mech bays and flushed a lot of extra XP to GXP. Before the week is over I'll have 3 Variants at Master. There is quite a bit of gaming to be done with just 4 mech bays. Sell your mechs and equipment (but not engines) with reckless abandon! Getting new ones is really not that difficult. The main reason you hear for not selling stuff is the knee-jerk reaction to getting only 50% value back. Still there is no functioning economy in this game. The supply of CBills is infinite if a bit of a grind at times.

This is true, even in the days of repair and rearm if you were over 7,000,000 cbills in debt (below 0), you'd still have ways to dig yourself out of the hole.

You can sell it right now if you want. You do not have to keep it to get F and D to Elite. You only have to complete Basic. Remember getting ELITE doubles the BASIC skills effect. Getting Master requires 3 ELITE variants of the same WEIGHT CLASS. So it could be the F, the D, and a Raven if that is to your liking.
