About 90% of the time that I try to play this game at a resolution other than 1280x720, the game will crash to desktop instantly after the "searching" dialogue disappears instead of launching into game.
If I leave it at 720p, it works every time, just looks like utter crap on my 1080 monitor.
System is:
Win 8 64 bit,
8320 piledriver at 4.2ghz
8 gigs Kingston ddr3 1600
MSI twin frozr 7870
I have the latest catalyst 12.11 beta drivers.
And yes, I have tried reinstalling the game. Whenever I do reinstall, the game will work fine at 1080p for a few matches then go right back to crashing. It's not consistent however, the other morning I got in 5 matches in a row at 1080p with no crashes without doing a reinstall.
Does anyone have any ideas regarding this?

Have you tried windowed @ 1080p?
No go. Any resolution other than 720p in any mode causes the crash. (unless its one of the rare times that it works, in which case any resolution works fine. But this is only about 10% of the time)

One thing missing is the monitor, make and model. And what type of connection is being used? HDMI, DVI or VGA combo?
What resolution/mode are you running the desktop at?
And when you are in the ATI control panel, does it say it is running at 1080p/i or 720p?

Try disabling the overlay for Mumble. I had this exact problem and that did the trick.

I have the exact same problem. Stuck at 720p and other options do nothing, but does not crash. I do not have Mumble installed.

Not sure if this will work, but maybe it's worth a shot.
go to your Mechwarrior Online folder. There's a system.cfg file in there.
Open with notepad.
There's a resolution line which is set at 1280x720. You could try typing in the resolution you want. Save it and restart MWO.
if it doesn't work, make sure you set it back to the default.

Video card?
Driver version?
What type of video connection is being used?
Monitor brand and model?
Full Screen or Full/normal windowed mode? Does anything change if going from FS to FW/NW?
The reason I ask for Make/Model of Monitor or LCD TV and the type of connection being used is that there may be defined settings that need to be used.
Below are the technical specifics for my LCD TV. I currently use the VGA connection in the back for it.
Native Panel Resolution: 1920x1080
Signal Compatibility: Supports 480i (SDTV), 480P (EDTV), 720P (HDTV), 1080i (HDTV), 1080P Video Signals
Colors: 1.06 Billion
Computer Support: 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1320 x 768, 1920 x 1080 via VGA

I had problems until I used full screen window set to the same as my desktop resolution. Try that.

Beta drivers. From ATI. You are brave.
Try all the modes, including Full Window. Clear the shader cache just in case.
