Why not have at least 2 types of SRMs, that is, SRMs from different manufacturers.
One would have a high damage, but wide spread. The other would have less damage, but a tighter spread.
Same principle can be applied to PPCs. One brand of PPC will give you the heat penalty (as proposed by the devs), while another brand will not have heat penalty, but have its pinpoint damage reduced but with splash damage added.
And also, the devs should add some back story to these balance fixes by adding some fictional fluff in the IS News.

Fires in Yori Mechworks' Particle Projection Cannons raise safety concerns.
Company engineers blame the PPC's outsourced supply chain, saying that poor quality components are coming from subcontractors that have operated largely out of Yori's view.
