I'm sure many of you long time players have watched as the meta of this game from closed beta evolved from first GaussCats, to LRM boats, then GaussCats/Gaussomets, and now finally to heavy alpha builds focusing on PPCs and Gauss Rifles. While this isn't necessarily a problem in itself, I feel it really detracts from the spirit of Mechwarrior and Battletech, as a few (rather obvious) weapons are being sorely forgotten: lasers. While I of all people am thrilled to see PPCs actually useful in this game (I liked them before they were popular :)) I feel that the more common energy weapons are getting the shaft. Now before you get bent out of shape, let me explain. In Battletech and most MW games, lasers are a key staple of doing damage to your opponent. They are light, cheap, offer decent damage, and have unlimited ammunition, and have a variety of range brackets to make them useful and damaging depending on their size/options. I feel that MWo doesn't accurately represent this because the current meta revolves around big weapons that hit hard INSTANTLY, whereas a laser requires a duration hold over the target. Initially, I didn't have a problem with this when I joined the MWO closed beta; I thought they were very pretty and effective, but now that the meta has evolved to instant-fire weapons, lasers are being forgone in favor of larger, heavier weapons, and doing damage with lasers becomes much harder without getting a faceful of particles/lead. My suggestion, then is to make standard lasers instant fire, or very near to it. Pulse lasers, I feel, are fine as they are, but standard lasers need to do their damage quicker in order to be effective with all the instant damage spam going on, and I think that making this simple change would bring alot of variety back into the game without necessarily breaking anything. Couple this with the new heat scaling and you have a winning system; this would prematurely *** laserboating in the tail, while still making lasers an effective weapon. Thoughts?
