Alright, I've got a mech build here that works surprisingly well for a light. If someone has done this one before, I wouldn't know about it. I haven't seen this thing trolling about, so I'm pretty sure it's new.

Basically, its a spinoff of the PPC spider with a twist - cram in a pair of medium lasers, keep it's speed, while at the same time not sacrificing the ECM or most of it's armor.

Took a helluva lot of trial and error, but I pulled it off.

Strip the sucker down to it's bones first off, and throw in an XL 245 and an EndoSteel structure. Why the 245 and no the 255? Well, You get an extra 1.5 tons to work with while only sacrificing 6 kph. A good trade off, in my opinion.
(a quick note, my Spider has the Speed Tweak upgrade, so this may not be the case for new players)

Next, yank out all the jumpjets except for two - you'll need those to get over hills or evade. It takes a hit in the mobility department, but you get another three tons to work with. Finally, stick in the ECM and adjust the armor to about 160 points - you get more armor to work with if you strip down that useless left arm.
Focus on the legs, then the torso and right arm for armor.

If you've done everything correctly, your Spider should weigh 21 tons with 9 tons to work with. At this point, you can either go with a PPC spider and allocate the last two tons as you see fit.

But where's the fun in that?

A couple setups that I like to use are either a pair of Small Pulse Lasers and a Large Pulse Laser, or a pair of mediums and an ER PPC. The sucker is great for hit and runs - if you're in a nice hilly spot with lots of cover, you can duck in an out of a pair of Assaults and troll the hell out of them. This thing can easily do over 250 damage per game, and is perfectly capable of taking down any mech in the game if you play it right.

As I said though, use this thing for hit and runs - you'll be the prime target for lights and the other big guys you'll be ******* off in the thing, and it crumples up faster than tin foil.

See you in the field

I normally stick with the XL255, because speed is never bad. You can still get 2 MLasers and a PPC or LPL, plus 2 JJs and ECM without sacrificing any torso or right arm armour.

Alternatively use 2 SLasers and use the additional ton for a DHS or 4 JJs.

Anyway, check out all the other Spider 5D build threads.
