7970GHZ edition with Catalyst 12.7 drivers.
Faster, with more RAM for high resolution.

A 2560x1440 resolution should definitely make more use of the 3GB of RAM, especially if you're running any kind of anti-aliasing (which I assume will be the case). I'm not surprised the 7970 is as fast or faster than the 680 in this particular case. The 7970 GHZ edition is, of course, basically the best single GPU one can buy right now (barring some better binned 680 from a board partner that's faster without being prohibitively more expensive).

why have I never heard of Zotac? have I been under a rock or something?
I have been fond of XFX cards, and own several. how does Zotac's limted lifetime warranty compare ?

I'm currently running a XFX HD5870, and am toying with upgrading, I don't even see it listed on most of the benchmarks people post.
I would love to get a beta invite just so I can test my system out ! :-p

I also have an xfx 5870 and am thinking of upgrading...I'm just not sure if its worth 250+ for a significant upgrade.

The HD 5870 seems enough to run in high resolution, I just installed a HD 6750 in my computer yesterday and your 5870 is more powerful. In my opinion, you're fine in the GPU department.

No Geforce GTX 690, no Radeon HD 7970 GHZ edition, no updated drivers...

Zotac's "lifetime warranty" is complete BS by what I've heard - it only covers the product lifetime, so once that card is no longer produced, you warranty is up then and there. If you get a high end card, it is likely you'll have only one year or so.

Depends, do you want everything on 60+ frames per second at ultra high detail, possibly across a multi monitor setup, and have extra money to spare? if so maybe.

Otherwise no.

Zotac.... Another low end brand card... I would "NEVER" advise someone to get a Zotac, Galaxy, PNY, ECS, Sparkle, Biostar, Diablotek, and probably not powercooler either... But Zotac... Nope, and if you don't believe me, look it up, that's all i'm saying.

Swap out powercolor for Diamond and visiontek? I know that I dislike their fab and wouldn't personally get one of their cards... but their performance is just amazing by their reviews as of late.

But yes, stay away from Zotac.

Three glaring problems here...

1. PNY Quadros are actually very good. PNY is just OEM nvidia cards for the most part, just like evga! They have no high end consumer cards to speak of, but their Quadro support is amazing.

2. Galaxy has a few customs that aren't bad at all. Finding them is a ***** as their release tends to be limited.

3. Sparkle, same deal as galaxy.

.
No glaring problems anywhere... PNY, I can remember seeing their stuff at Walmart and laughing... PNY is nothing like EVGA and what they offer, OEM reference card aside... I don't usually buy EVGA, (bought 2 8800gt and 2 GTX 260 216 core) but their customer service seems to get pretty good marks.. I would put PNY at somewhere near lower middle class.. But you don't have to believe me it's all just anecdotal, and means nothing.
.
Galaxy and Sparkle, I wouldn't touch them.. Seen way too much crap come out of both of those companies..
But if you like them, then buy them... I won't.

Welcome to the Catleap/Crossover/Shimian/Achieva/whatever club. I run a GTX 680 at 2560x1440, my buddy has a 7970. We both have similar FPS in BF3 on Ultra, 4xMSAA, about 50fps average, at 1920x1080 we get over 100fps.

I know MWO runs on max settings at 5760x1080 on a 560ti SLI machine. Either card should be fine for you. If you're going to be spending 500+ on a video card I would however recommend going for either the 3gb 7970 or 4gb GTX... VRAM usage for me is at 75% in BF3 and Skyrim. I'll assume that over the next few years titles will be hungry for more.

And like others have said, go for the more... distinguished... manufacturers. Generally they're better with driver updates, OC/management tools, warranties, DOA/Returns, etc. Just my two cbills.

PNY has some respectable products in some areas it seems. I use their SD cards and have been reasonably impressed, performance-wise. I have a couple of Class 10s hanging around; they're some of the faster cards I've encountered.

That said, there's a big difference between being competent at making some cheap flash devices, and being a good video card board partner. It's not like I'd never buy from them if there wasn't some reason to (some massive discount, a unique product, etc), but "lower middle" is probably as good a description as any, and when you can just go to one of the really good companies instead for the same price, why wouldn't you?
