It may be running in the background. Just wondering if you checked that.

Ummm.... Why are you trying to play this game on a Computer with Windows Server 2008 as your OS?
FYI Windows Server 2008 is not designed for gaming at all and you will run into endless issues trying to run games on Windows Server 2008...

Also Check your Task-manager.

This error occurs on a Windows Pro 64 bit OS. I have disabled firewall and antivirus. I have checked the task manager (showing processes from all users) and there is nothing from bootstrap sentinel or any identifiable Mechwarrior process. Furthermore, I have uninstalled, done a manual clean of the registry of all associated files and then re-installed.

This error persists regardless of what I do. After 15 years in I.T. I am stumped and this is the only forum post regarding the topic. I guess I'll open a support ticket since no one seems to know.

I have the same issue since today. Never had it before and I did not change anything about my hardeware or OS.

I get the "You already have an instance of the patcher running!" notification, even when I freshly rebooted the computer so there cannot possibly be any prior instances running.

It is getting worse and worse for the past hours.

First I uninstalled the game and tried to reinstall it. That did not work out, because the patch download proceeded at the speed of the high king of snails (about 1 MB per minute). At some point it just stopped and told me the connection was lost.

So I uninstalled whatever had come to be, again. I assumed the next installation should work.

It did. Until it was done and I tried to launch the game. THEN it told me that some font was allegedly missing, but it offered no help how to solve that issue whatsoever. That error was persistant over multiple attempts and a restart. So I untinstalled again.

Now I am doing the third installation and patch attempt this day. Lets see how it works out.

At least the "You already have an instance of the bootstrap patcher running!" error did not show up again so far.

I sent in a support request as I performed the same process as you, plus the things that I did on my own with no improvement. I will post the steps that lead to resolution as they become available.

I'm having this same issue on a Windows 7 64 bit laptop (fully speced ThinkPad w530), The game's installer downloads fine, I install DX9 (BTW, DX11 anyone?!...what is this 2004?!...I digress) *install DX9* just fine, and finally go to star the games client, and I get the aforementioned error. Any though Devs?

I first had this Issue in october, I climbed the tech support tree in which i wasted about 4 hours of my time uninstalling and reinstalling various things and cleaning the registry (directx, .net framework etc) at which tech support gave up and passed me on to "QA" and now its been a few weeks of silence..So no fix yet which reallllly sucks.

some folks have been having various issues that track back to a broken .net framework (something about 3.5 and 4 stepping on each other?), and/or installing DX11 (yes, 11) to replace/repair something broken in DX9.

I'm not sure if this is a MWO thing, or a windows update thing. That's about the only variable I've not seen addressed.. some people let windows update all the time (to be "safe), others hardly ever update windows. I fall in the latter group, having had nightmare scenarios with windows updates in the past.

I'd suggest installing .net framework 3.5 and 4 (in that order..?), then DX9 and DX11 (in that order).. see if that sorts out whatever weird bug you might be running into? ... though, one would think that fresh OS installs that get updated should have that sorted.. but you never know. Give it a shot, it's only 30 minutes to an hour and can't really hurt.

I think the reason they aren't moving on this too quickly for you is, it's not a very common problem and is more a windows issue than a game issue. These are a pain to track down and take a lot of time, and I'd guess they don't see it as "worth their time" for just a handful of cases when there are lots of people in game with no issues.

I have been working with support and the devs since january. We have been making progress and might be close to a fix, when it happens i'll be sure to post it here. Its is actually a problem with the patcher.

OK, I think I got it. When I initially installed it, I put it in C:/Games. That restricts file access rights in some systems (even if you run as Admin). When I re-installed into C:/Program Files (x86), the errors cleared, and I could load the patcher, update, and play just fine. Try it out!
