“Those Liao ******** think that just one death commando is enough to kill me” Grolta cursed out loud as he wiped the blood from his hands. He did a quick scan of his cockpit, making sure everything was in its place, especially the one long strand of hair he kept across the seal, which he saw had been disturbed. Living out here in the Periphery you learn tricks to survive, and knowing when someone has messed with your mech was a vital one. Alarms and explosions echoed throughout the outer walls of the old Star League base his pirate crew had found. Luckily for him most of the mechs were kept safe within the fortified walls of complex. He saw his men scrambling to their mechs, hastily starting them. One Dragon took a step from its bay, just to have its knee blown out by a concealed satchel charge.
Grolta yelled into his radio “STOP!!!… Techs do a quick sweep of all the mechs, and I want that Dragon back up, even if it’s just dragging that leg.” He knelt down for a closer look at his own mech and after a minute found a shaped charge fastened under one of the counsels. He disarmed it and tossed it to one of the techs that was busy scouring his Atlas. “Now for the real one” Grolta whispered to himself. A few minutes later he found the small almost invisible shaped charge in his neural helmet. Once power would have been supplied to the helmet, it would have blown off his head. He finally got the ok from the techs and started up his AS7-RV. Sporadic reports came to him through the radio, describing the chaos outside. The Liao’s had decided to send a company to deal with his raiders. And so fare their surprise attack had his men disorganized and dying.
That was about to change…
Grolta didn’t know if the commander was overconfident or just an *****, but he was assuming both because he had kept his three assault mechs back and was letting his mediums and lights fight up front. Granted they were doing a fine job of killing trucks, personal and they destroyed the lone Commando that was on watch. However in those first few moments, when the base hanger doors open, they weren’t ready for what they saw and that gave Grolta’s mechs just enough time to take down two of them. Of course a big part had to do with a combined strategy he came up with long time ago and was now using. He had his crew set a raging inferno at the opening inside the base. The enemy’s pilots expecting to be able to focus on one target as it came out of the base found only billing smoke and intense heat. However from cover a couple men with hand held tag tracked and relayed the Liao movements to Grolta’s mechs. The initial wave of weapons fire coming out of the base took them by surprise. Then the rush of lights and mediums running through the blaze right into their ranks also disrupted any plans they had.
“Did you ever think how you were going to explain losing a company of mechs to a rag tag group of pirates” Grolta chided into his radio while taking laser fire in left shoulder. “Shut up you filthy scum *******” was the best translation Grolta to make out from the screaming Chinese coming back on the channel. His AS7-RV was badly damaged, already missing its right arm. He was stalking in a circle keeping his right side away from the other two mechs. His right hand man Hishra, in his CTF-1X was even worse off, but he knew that old Kurita was a tough ******* with plenty of fight left in him. Sad news was that the three mechs left were the assaults, an Atlas, Awesome and a Stalker. Luckily they had some damage too and at least one, the Awesome pilot seemed to be a bit green. Hishra had the Stalker pilot all to himself on the fare side of the base, but that left the Atlas and the Awesome for Grolta.
“1…2…3…4…” Grolta silently counted to himself. On four he goosed the throttle of his Atlas making it lurch forward, just as the AC/20 fired from the Liao Atlas. The round skimmed the back of his mech but did no real damage. More medium laser fire found its way to his mech’s left arm. Warning indications start flashing in his cockpit. Grolta turned his mech starting to angle his way towards the opposing Atlas, baring his back to the Awesome pilot. A risky maneuver but Grolta noticed that the Awesome pilot had a slight tendency to telegraph his shots. The Awesome pilot maneuvered also, lining up his torso so he could get the maximum effectiveness out of his ppcs which he let loose with all of them. Three solid hits over the back armor melted much of it away, and again warning indications started flashing. Grolta started another count, pretending to ignore the damage his Atlas received, still maintaining his lumbering stride towards the other Atlas. Short range missiles started to fly towards his mech, from the enemy Atlas, which would have caused some serious damage if not for his quick reflexes. While too close to arm, his LRMs made for improvised flak cannon, intercepting the SRMs in midflight. The Awesome pilot was also maneuvering again… “4” Grolta hissed just as the Awesome arms came up to fire. Grolta planted his left foot hard, turning his mechs profile so only the side was visible. While one of the Awesome ppcs did hit his left side, the other two shots melted away armor on the Liao commander’s mech. By offering himself up as an easy target, Grolta real adjective was standing there, overheated and shut down, from its second alpha. Grolta quickly stepped, turned and fired everything. The three medium lasers, combined with the ER large laser soften the cockpit of the Awesome, but it was the two Gauss rounds ripping through that provided the deadly end to the mech. Grolta continued his turn but he knew it was too late. An AC/20 round with 6 SRMs slammed into his left back side tearing away what armor he had left there. Unfortunately his Gauss rifle took some shrapnel, causing it to explode, wiping out his LRM 10 in the process.
Grolta throttled up, charging the other mech. He opened up all the radio channels, “You know guys like me don’t have a lot to live for, and we hate losing too, so enjoy the afterlife with me.” He screamed as bitching Betty counted down in the background “Self-destruct in t-minus 3, 2, 1…” The Liao commander screamed out a curse and punched out, rocking up into the air. Grolta looked over too Hishra limping his mech towards him. “OK boys start the salvage, we need to get out of here and get to our secondary hide out. Oh and somebody go pick up the pissed off Liao.” He barked out over the radio. He thought to himself, “It was always good to have a trick up your sleeve and having a disabled self-destruct was his.”

I am very sorry but we dont need an assault that has capabilities for 2 ac20s, 5 med lasers. That is where the devastator comes in. Also it would end up with 2 gauss and 2-4 ppcs. Which we just dont need right now. Maybe a hero version of the atlas rs with its missile hardpoints removed in favor of a ballistic but lets face it that would still be OP as hell. Instead of ac40 jagers we would see ac40 atlases which is a slight upgrade. 30% more armor, standard engine, 50% cooler looking, torso mounted so they are harder to blow off. It is like upgrading magikarp to gyarados. You gain everything and lose literally nothing.
