Is this joystick too old for MWO? Used it for MW4 but that was a few years ago. I know we really dont know specs for what this game will run but I just want opinions.

There has been no news from PGI on what hardware is officially supported. Artemis is presumed, but since it's a concept product, it's not even available for purchase.

Thing is, there aren't even very many models of Joysticks that're even in production. MW4 was one of the last major games that required a joystick... The only current game I can think of now that requires one is Microsoft Flight simulator.

The good news, PewPew, is that as long as you can get drivers for your OS, then the joystick should be usable in the game. For the programming side of it, it should just be a simple matter of setting up the control translation for torso twist, throttle, hat, and programable buttons.

I've used it recently with MW:4 Mercenaries and it worked fine. I don't see why it wouldn't work for MW:O

is the joystick a serial or usb one?

If its USB just plug in and go, make sure you calibrate it tho.

if its serial...

Wrong section?

Also I assume they're going tell us what hardware is supported, closer to release.

p.s. anyone see the hawken controller, looks like a strong competitor

I never used a joystick in MW4, I tried in MW2/3 but never was any good, always way better with mouse.

I was always a joystick guy. The Artemis looks like my playstyle, as long as the price is right. As much as I would like it, spending a fortune for it because it's a specialty item won't fly for my wife. haha With that being said, there are plenty of nice joysticks out with a good price. That exact joystick you're talking about got me through a lot of games. I bought my brother a Saitek ST290 (I can't believe I remember the name haha) And he loved it. It was only a few years ago so I would imagine that compatibility should be available.

So let me ask this for myself and others. What would those of you with good controllers recommend:

1 at the <$100 price range.
2 at the $100-$200 range
3 Hide the credit card bill from the wife range.

Also possibly a good gaming mouse combo as a more economical alt?

All constructive advice appreciated.

Had to retire mine, have the port to usb adapter. The JS wasnt as responsive as the USB JS.
So I just put it away. Really like it though, used it without the FFB seemed more accurate
than the springy ones.

1: Tough choice. Logitech has the silky smooth travel with a lot better center detent than Saitek, but you pick up the horrible Logitech potentiometers that have a nasty tendency to start spiking within a few months. Saitek has the better potentiometers, but the spring-and-plate centering is probably the worst for Mechwarrior games - plus you miss out on the excellent Logitech ergonomics.

I'm actually going to come at this from the side: Best under $100 joystick is the Thrustmaster T.16000M. Right off the bat, it has Hall-effect sensors. In fact, it has the same hall sensors that the Warthog has. Then you got the excellent software. Very low amounts of Unintended Axis Movement from the twist stick... All in all, this is probably the most accurate twist stick ever made. Dual spring centering that is worlds ahead of a Saitek spring-and-plate setup. Downside is cheap plastic exterior and questionable button locations. And let's not forget Thrustmasters horrible customer service.

2: Much easier choice. CH Fighterstick with CH Pro Pedals. This setup will last years and years and years. Very high quality potentiometers, very accurate, very light throws. Probably one of the most reliable companies.

3: Thrustmaster Warthog with Simped F16 pedals. There are more expensive routes, but this setup represents the top-of-the-line before getting into custom simpit installations.

Many "older" joysticks will work. However you'll probably have to get an adapter for the "Joystick" port as most computers don't use 3rd party sounds cards that have that port attached.

I can get 5 sidwinder 3d pros and several others for 3-5 a piece at my local thrift store.

Blackfire, I LOVE your sig. XD

Thomas, I just looked up the Warthog and wow, what a piece of machinery. The F16 pedals are beyond sexy too, I'm in love.

I'm fond of the X 52 myself. It's fully programable, and there is just something really satisfying about flipping up the safety latch over the fire button just before the action starts.

I find this topic intriguing.

Gaming has been my main hobby for over 10 years now and I strongly prefer PC games yet not once have I ever used a joystick.

Do they really make a difference between using a keyboard/mouse for a game that allows a joystick? Also even if they are equal do you find it a lot more "immersive" to use a joystick? Honestly if I can find a cheap one I'd be willing to buy it just for the "fun" factor even if I don't play any better than with a keyboard/mouse.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Man, I loved my force feed Sidewinder Pro. It placed you right in the game and made you feel like you were piloting a mech, and that is what made MW3 the best game at the time.
