It's Ineffective To Punish Snipers By Lowering Dps (Heat Penalties Fail)

Snipers, by their very nature, are not about dealing a ****-ton of damage. They're about waiting for an opportune moment and hitting something vital. Strikers are the same way - they run in when someone is having a bad time, finish him off, and disappear back into the crowd or some cover.

Trying to prevent these builds from doing what they do by limiting their DPS is simply ineffective. Sure, it doesn't allow them to brawl as well using the same cheesy tactic, but it's their ability to ruin someone's day in one shot from across the map that makes them broken.

Sure, now that SRMs are back, you can rush them and expect to have a fair chance, but that's only because of the SRM buff. Most of the time, smart snipers stay well-protected behind their lines to ensure a rush would be suicide.

In addition, good players will simply chain fire at close range. At close range, chain fire doesn't have such a negative effect on accuracy since the target is large on the screen. At far distances where chain fire would make the most difference, it's simply not needed - there's no pressure and you can pick your shots.

Tonight, I ran about 15 matches. Most were in my Pretty Baby running SRMs (<333), but I took each cheese monster out for a spin to see how the heat penalties affected them. Needless to say, I'm not impressed.

I exercised extremely lax, spammy fire discipline, and it barely affected the way I play. These videos demonstrate why heat / limiting DPS is an inadequate solution:

Cheese King 732

Cataphract PPC Jumpsniper

PPC Stalker

Extreme, pinpoint damage needs to be prevented, not punished. What I'm really trying to say here is can we fix convergence now?

Pauls idea was bad and worthless and actually does punish new players and casuals sadly.

Just random numbers, in an inconsistent system and no information in the mechlab.

The truly sad part is:

I had a game yesterday in my AC40 Jager, my first match in a month, its not nerfed at all, but it never deserved one, even Garth said so @NGNG.

The patch nerfed:

- NEW PLAYERS

- CASUAL PLAYERS

- ALL PLAYERS THAT DON'T READ PNs

- PHYSICS

Yesterday was a sad day for MWO and the MWO Community. I hope the for nothing in the future...

One more PPCcrybaby.
Why no one can't understand that snipers never win a war? It is infantry prerogative!
Want easy-kill mode? Don't wanna try to play hardcore style?
Than what are you doing in Mechwarrior universe?

P.S.
Sorry for my bad english.

P.P.S
I have 3 sniper machines from 16. I have fun playing them. But it is too boring when everyone just stays in cover & don't wanna fight in close.

I'm calling so everyone who starts NEW topic about how it is hard to be a sniper now (better make one theme for all snipers).
Try to play LRM mech & you will know what is really hard.

Have you tried firing 4xPPC now on hotter maps? If you're carrying anything less than 20 DHS you would immediately overheat. The heat penalty is not for DPS, it's for preventing mass-boating alpha-strike. Now those "snipers" are forced to group 2 PPCs together, which means unless the player has crazy aim or the target is utterly huge, landing shots on a same body part is much harder now.

How about 2xPPC + 2x ERPPC?
Didn't see any trouble landing shots in same locations even at 5xAC2 Jager. Have a problem - maybe better not bee a SNIPER?

LOL and you can't read. This topic is about how EASY it is to still be a sniper. The heat penalty is a joke.

Why do you care about an exploit that will be gone in two weeks?

running a swayback you basically can alpha one time for 60%+ heat the 2nd will push you over 120% to 130% heat, running a 732 or 4 PPC stalker , you can alpha strike 2 times and still be under the cap. Granted the 4P and the blackjack are the only 2 mediums around with that many energy hardpoints.

Right now, unless they boost the heat through the roof on both the PPC variants and penalties for using more then 2, the only other option which will not require months of coding is to turn PPC's into true sniper weapons, ie making them the slowest reloading weapons in the game. Basically the LRM of energy weapons, with an exploitable weakness that faster mechs can abuse.

While i like the idea of convergence and always have, PGi seems extremely resistant to putting it in the game, it would take months given how fast they work, and frankly do you really think they wont completely break everything in the game if they put it in by making it to complex and convoluted?

Jump in Splatcat

Remove atlas in 2 hits.

PPC stalker loses side torso instantly and turns COMPLETELY around to run from splat cat with wild abandon.....he died tired.

How is anybody surprised that the boating penalty system is a failure? Have schools stopped teaching basic math skills or what?
