I remember in MW3 that when you fired your LRM's they had to travel a minimum distance before the exploded. I believe if they impacted before the minimum distance the target still took some force damage but really it just ran a higher chance of knocking your opponent down.

Is this going to be implemented in MWO as well?

Standard LRMs had a Minimum distance they needed to arm. They were rules for hot loading ,but, there were consequences. Clan and Star League LRMS have no Mins.

First introduced in 2400 by the Terran Hegemony, Long Range Missiles are designed to engage the enemy at great distances at the expense of damage dealt. Adapted towards the profusion of electronic jamming on the battlefield and the effectiveness of current armor designs, these missiles are capable of indirect fire and disperse over a smaller area than Short Range Missiles. Inner Sphere LRM launchers achieve this range by firing at a ballistic launch angle, making them less accurate at close range. Clan LRM launchers do not suffer from this effect, in addition to being smaller and more compact, thanks to their technological advantage. LRMs are highly upgradable, able to fire a variety of warheads and benefit from devices such as Artemis IV FCS.

I think that LRMs arc upward when fired and cannot hit anything within 200m in MWO. Maybe if you are at the bottom of a hill and fire at the ground you could make some hit like in MWLL, but the rarity of that instance and improper use suggests to me that no special damage besides the usual will be given.

Now that I think on it I do remember in MW3 the LRM's were a direct line of sight fire and from what I have seen in the videos of MWO they are an indirect type of fire where they go up and then rain down on top of you. I wonder if the SRM's will be LOS?

SRM are LOS I think, not sure about SSRMS though

From Dev Q&A 05:

Will the ranges of the BattleMechs' weapons - and the relationships between them - be more similar to those from the BattleTech tabletop game (including, perhaps, some implementation of any of the minimum, short, medium, long, and extreme range brackets), or those from the previous MechWarrior computer games? –Strum Wealh

[DAVID] With minimum ranges, it depends on how justified we can be in putting them into the game without them being silly. For PPCs, there’s mentions in the lore about they don’t reach a full charge at close ranges so as not to damage the attacker’s own electronic systems. LRMs, being meant for long range, do not necessarily arm before they clear a certain distance. But it’s harder to justify why you can’t accurately fire an Autocannon/2 or Autocannon/5 up close, other than it was a balance to their long range in the tabletop game, so they won’t be affected by any sort of minimum range. The tabletop long ranges, on the other hand, we’re interpreting as the maximum effective range. Lasers, AC slugs, and whatnot will travel past this range, but will begin to do less and less damage, and the effects of gravity on any sort of physical projectile will make it harder to hit your target. Missiles reaching the limits of their range will automatically detonate.

"DAVID" is David Bradley (Game Designer, Overseeing 'Mech combat and BattleTech® Rules)

Has anyone seen any more-recent statements from the Devs stating differently from the above?

Nothing yet, ask in the next Q&A.
