Everyone needs to go see this movie even If it sucks. The main reason is it's a giant robot movie if it does good maybe they'll make more and someone with make a Battletech movie. The Stackpole books are perfect for a movie! you could really make two movies out of the book one about Phelan and the other about Victor

What's the chance of it actually being good?

There is a reason giant mech movies are pretty much extinct and while it certainly is possible to make one, taking them, adding cheese and godzilla to the mix simply won't work...

Nonononono. Pacific Rim is a non-starter, a complete pile of idiocy, throwing away a chance to make a great mecha movie with such a budget. No support. A Battletech movie stands a far greater chance of occurring if we make sure to never give dung like this the time of day.

just because its not what you want (and not what I want too... I need to agree) it doesn't mean its bad. to fans of classic mecha animation of the "super robot genre", Pacific Rim is just awesome

I've got to disagree. I witnessed the coming to America of each wave of giant robot variety, the first peak of which were the 'Shogun Warrior' types: Gaiking, Grandizer, StarVengers, Danguard Ace. And the presentation was utterly different than what we see with Pacific Rim. Evangelion was the second peak much later - which I don't like but can appreciate to some degree - was a much more sober and tuned presentation. PR is quite simply awfully done crapola. This isn't a matter of alternative appreciation - it's a matter of poor quality and very shoddy understanding of the genre (that statement aimed at PR's producers).

Man I dunno what you guys are talking about, I think it looks awesome.

It's Del Toro, which means it won't just be a stupid action flick--hell, even Blade 2 had moments of deep, epic beauty.

That's big budget giant aliens/robots at best movie.

Mechs are machines piloted by someone or something, not living machines/aliens that look like machines.

I know what you mean, but it is something that really bugs me - in either direction. IE, people calling mechs robots, or people calling robots mechs. I suppose you could have robotic mechs, in the same way you could have robotic tanks - ie, tanks piloted by an AI system instead of a crew/single pilot, but the two words do have different meanings.

Of course, it's only a very select number of mediums where such things actually matter, so I've become used to people misusing the terms. But, when it does come to shows or games actually in those genres, I would say that it's more a matter of basics than of specifics. We are people piloting our mechs, not robots.

Or at least, I'm a person, and I doubt you're a robot either...

...Or ARE you....?

Well, Pacific Rim is simply Robot Jox (the way robots are handled is exactly the same, bar the 2 pilot nonsense) had a child with Godzilla, so...

The director is whats selling Pacific Rim more than anything.

Toro can get away with a "goofy" setup for a movie, more so than many other directors. He has an ability to sell the strange.

Battletech would have to be an action/drama movie with a serious tone

For a Battletech movie, how are you going to get non BT fans to understand the politics, technology, and history of where the story is set? A big budget Hollywood production has to have mass appeal. I just don't see BT having that. Besides, didn't they already make a BT movie? :P

Heh, I was always amused by Team Banzai's inclusion in the lore.

I was rather perplexed that the 3039 TRO mentioned Banzai in the Battlemaster entry but not in the Hatchetman entry.

I would also go and see a BattleTech movie, but i'd wonder how they would get across the way the universe and politics are handled by all the different factions. And the lore and history behind the eras, those kind of things. I don't know how well it would come across to the casual, nom-BattleTech acquainted. Once again though I would see a BT movie.
