Why shouldn't it be the "go-to" weapon? It's 14 tons heavy, after all. The PPC delivers half the DPS for half the weight and with twice the range.

I don't see an issue there. The other ACs need to be better. I tend to think the A/C10 also needs 5 DPS to be worth its weight. The 2 ton difference and more armor for the AC/10 would be to compensate the alpha advantage the AC/20 enjoys.

I doubt it. Raising the RoF of AC10 will not do much. It is what it is, a one shot 10 damage weapon. While upping its RoF will increase its DPS, it also means that in order to utilize the improved DPS, you will have less time torso-twisting. Couple that with other weapon(lasers, SRMs) you have on your mech, it won't improve its performance much.

I believe AC20 should be nerfed to put it back in line with the rest ACs. Two more tons for double the punch is just too great of a deal. :)

One of the things I think that should in fact be nerfed about the AC/20 is its range. The doubling of max range for ballistics is one of the things that really, really benefits the AC/20 more than any other ballistic weapon. Once your range is 400m+, it's not that easy to really hit any targets with it, so the benefit of a theoretical range of 1000m or so is mostly theoretical, even on the maps that even have areas where you can shoot that far without hitting a hill, wall or building.

That's one of the things that makes the AC/10 really superflous - up to 540m range (actually, even a bit more than that), the AC/20 deals more single shot damage than the AC/10. Sure,t eh AC/10 has better DPS sooner than that, but at that range, you'll not find yourself using the ROF all that much, you spend too much time finding and aiming at targets in the first place.

If that advantage was lost, the AC/10 would be a lot more competitive at the post 270m ranges.

God I hope not.

Could be a game breaker.
