After mastering my Spider 5D (with the other two variants elited), I'm not sure if I should pick up another Light. I can score roughly 400+ damage with Spider 5D with a single LL and two MLas, but without either JJ or ECM I'm not sure if I could do that. Anyway, here are a few builds that I figured out. Please give me some feedback if you use similar builds.

4X: XL225, 10DHS, 5JJ, 1xERPPC, 1xSRM6(1ton), 2xMG(1ton). That's really as much firepower as I could stuff in this slow-arse Light. I'm thinking about using it as a mini-poptart.

3L: XL255, 10DHS, 1xLL, 2xML, 2xSSRM2(2ton). I plan to use it mostly as a moshpit-backstabber, the way I use my ECM Spider. Unlike PPCs, Lasers tend to get ignored during chaotic combat, and ECM definitely helps in that regard. What bothers me is the lack of JJ.

2X: STD245, 10DHS, 4xML/SPL, 1xSRM6(1ton). Probably the only high-power Light that could run a STD engine, though people tend to shoot legs most of times...maybe I should wait for a Hero?

Or should I just go for Jenner?

=====================================================================================

UPDATE: since I already made my decision and bought two of those bad birds already, here's my first impression.

It takes a little more than five seconds for a Raven to lose her legs when she's caught in crossfire. 'Mandos are tiny, Jenners are short and Spiders are exceptionally slim. Yet the Ravens...they walk with their graceful, big-arse legs in slow, long strides instead of rapid steps....

Also, the lack of forearms, although indeed helps centering firepower from arms and torsos, makes Ravens not as good as, say, TDK or Machinegun-Spider in short-range combat.

With that said, the 4X build I posted above performed greatly as I intended, given that I don't fall into my Spider mind-set. It also works surprisingly well in harvesting kills (killstealing huehuehue) - the ERPPC+SRM6 provides probably the best damage-burst a Light can get. *sees a red-CT Atlas* *JJ in* *ALPHAINDEMFACE* *JJ out*

The 3L works vastly differently that what I expected. The lack of JJs is a great drawback, thus it works as a skirmisher (and provides ECM cover) . Only occasionally can you make your way behind some unlucky dude and stab him in the back. With that said, the two SSRM certainly gives any Light a headache :) Now I see why a certain person has a certain hatred toward 3L.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo helmstif!
Do not fall to the dark side, cookies and what not!
Do NOT go and pilot a raven!
Take Commandos, or Jenner instead!

Or even go and take something different then a light!

I own every light there is, DESPITE ravens.
I just despise those things, since the 3L became king of the cheese....

I'm not a fan of PPCs or Streaks on Ravens, but the Raven 2X with STD245 engine is something that I have tried out quite a lot, and with SRMs getting buffed recently, it's a more viable build than before. Both offensively and defensively, because incoming streaks will no longer be homing in on your CT, so the ability to lose a side torso is more valuable than before.

You do have some spare weight on that thing though, so shave off a little build of armour, get an extra DHS and you're up to a cool 42% heat efficiency. Actually, I might try out that build again too, it's been so long.

By the way, I use a STD240, because it's a standard engine that comes with a number of stock mechs. But if you have 1,5 mill to blow on the STD245, that's cool.

@ Ewigan: I hear you. Although some of us Raven 3L pilots have been avoiding cheesy builds since christmas 2012, yet we are still met with prejudice and discrimination. Kind of like the good mutants in Fallout 2.

Ravens aren't op anymore, go ahead. Although you'll get better use out of a quad medium dual srm 4 xl 300 jenner... because it's a MONSTER.

1) Jenners are too mainstream; 2) the variants lack variety comparing to any other Light for now; 3) Jenner 7K is simply inferior.

If only Raven 2X could fit in a STD250....

EDIT: whatever I'm buying one, starting with 4X. #yolo

***** :D

well, you COULD have gone and kitted the JR7-K out completely different to the D.
That's what i did, so they play completely different.
My K runs with one ERPPC and 2 Med lazors. Plays a "tiny bit different" to my D with 2 SSRMs, 2 small Pulse and 2 small Lazors.
and the F... well... 6 Small Pulse lazors rock these days!

The sad thing about all of this: i suck in jenners, and i think i would suck in ravens even more, cause they have the same weakness that jenners have minus (mostly) the Jumpjets: NO ARMS!!!

I am good in my mandos and definitely far from bad in my spiders.

But Jenners... *shrugs*

oh and Helmstif: i hope you die at least a little inside when you get your 3L :)

Why not the fatty unofficial light Mech the cicada? Sometimes run a hard mode 2lpl 3m for fun.

Plenty of builds to try and they can max out at the speed cap.

Since he has made his decision I guess the discussion is over.
3L= solid fast light mech if you stuff money into it.

Jenner= everything that has been done to it has been done. Not a bad mech, just played out.

Commando= You are a Spartan from 300 on the battlefield of today. You will get kills, but once people realize that all you are wearing is a loincloth, they're going to think, easy kill! Prove to them otherwise.

Spider= The Michael Jordon of the battlefield.
Jump, jump The Mac Dad will make you, jump, jump
Daddy Mac will make you, jump, jump
Kris Kross will make you jump, jump[color=#000000]

Win.

Updated with my first impressions. Not buying 2X yet as I believe a Hero Raven would come soon.

They're much, MUCH easier to hit with ballistics. To think I once killed a circling Cicada point-blank with my AC2x4 Jager....

Also I want to have a poptart without making me look like a complete fa***t packed with two ERPPCs and a Gauss. 4X fits that role perfectly, thanks to the two heat-free MGs.

A few points;

Many people in Spiders think piloting Lights is easier than it actually is, because Spiders are objectively bugged, and take way less damage than is actually put on them.
Like in the early days of massively lag-shielded Lights, when it was easy to take liberties in Lights with impunity, making the pilot think they were better than they actually were until reality hit them when lag-shielding was finally ended.

So be aware that whatever Light you pick other than a Spider will be much harder to work with, for the simple fact that they take 100% of the damage that hits you.

That said, they're still (imo) the most fun class to play, and should not be left out of your roster, and I very much hope you enjoy playing lights as much as I do.

If thinking Raven, just know beforehand that the 2X and 4X are essentially just vehicles to let you level up the one that counts, the 3L.
Just about everyone who's got a clue or wants to be competitive will have sold their 2X and 4X long ago, because other than the odd comedy match to mess about with mates, there is no point keeping them.
Luckily since you've already gone through the whole process with Spiders, you only need to take the Rav 2X and 4X to 8 of 8 Basics, and then you can take the 3L all the way to Master. Job done.

The 3L is still a good Light, using the classic build of 3x Mediums (AMS) or Med-Pulse and 2x Streaks with ECM - I'd still feel comfortable engaging any other Light (inc Cicadas) with my 3L in a 1v1.
Sure, we all see the odd player who racks up impressive damage in some weird oddball build of PPC & SRM-6 Raven but those are against bad players, and a decent enemy scout will just press you & win.

Far from being boring, the mediums & Streaks is the best anti-Light combo and lets you perform the real role of Lights - countering enemy Lights.
After that job is done you can do all the cool, flamboyant stuff like capping to draw off enemies, harassing enemy heavies, etc.. but on the whole, the team who's lights don't deal with the enemy scouts will find those enemy scouts have their wicked way with them.

Cicadas are one of my favourite chassis' in the game (I have over a day & a half of play-time on both the 2A & 3M in my mech-stats), and I particularly enjoy the X5 with either 4x meds & Streaks + BAP or 2x Large-Las & Streaks/BAP.
However I consider it mainly to be "muscle" to back up genuine Lights in a multi-scout rumble, rather than a 1st line scout itself.

Best of luck.

Yeah a hero raven or spider would logically be the next light mechs to get the hero treatment unless they pull a quickdraw and bring out a new light+hero.

You have to keep in mind that most cicadas (at least that I have spectated) don't run max engines and I never have in mine, most people back them with heavy ppcs or ballistics.

And good choice with the 4x raven, it is my fav raven. Currently run my mastered 4x with max engine 124kph, 1 ac2 2ml 1ssrm2 and jumpjets. Its quite fun watching other lights freak out when that constant daka is smacking them. But I would gladly drop down to 1 ac2 and 2 sl if the 4x had a larger engine cap =(
