You can try the jetpack, they are fun and give you a real mobility bonus. Especially on the new Canyon map.
Small mech are fun, but I don't think they are really good unless you use them for capping and base capture. Use medium mech with ballistic weapons or 4 laser. You can also try heavy mech with 6 laser.

No they cannot use jump jets.
Also, what Commando are you using? COM-2D or COM-3A? It would help us help you if we knew.
*In general, Light mechs (including Commandos) need speed. Most go with the maximum Extra Light Engine they can put into it (For COMS: 210), but it is not always the best option. I suggest you mech move at least 130kph without the Speed Tweak skill.
*While I build some of my Commandos around using STD engines, I would suggest that new players take advantage of XLs as they give you more tons to put into armor and weapons. XL engines do make you more vulnerable because the loss a L/R Torso will kill you.
*This is argued, but I would suggest maxing out your armor, or getting as close as possible to max. As little defense you have, you can't afford to have less.
*Though there are many builds out there, your best best is Medium Lasers and Short Range Missiles. If you have room for BAP, Streak SRMs are also a good option.
When playing a Commando, avoid dogfights with other lights (and fast mediums) as much as possible. Especially before Speed Tweak, most Lights will have more armor, firepower, possibility of jumpjets, AND be faster than you, all at the same time.
Only scout early into games, and after that stick with your team's bigger mechs. Support them by chasing off (not follow) enemy lights, and assist in attacking your team mates targets.
In the event of some one attempting to capture a/your base, you should have enough speed to assist in delaying them.
One last note: If you have yet to take off ArmLock in your options, I suggest you do so, as one of the advantages of the Commando and Spider is the ability to freely move your arms. This may complicate your weapon convergence.

Okay assuming you meant the 150 standard stock engine I upgraded it to a 155 (which has no weight difference, but a 3kph gain) I stuffed in a ECM, removed the medium laser and downgraded the SRMs to two SRM4s and a SRM2 due to ammo issues instead of 3xSRM4s. Biggest issue with these tiny engines is being forced to mount so many ******** heat sinks. I would find a brawly looking atlas or victor and be his sidekick, you have lots of punch but its offly spread out due to not having artemis. COM-2D (bleh!)
----------
Unfortunately the only way to REALLY get anything worth while out of the commando looks like you pretty much need a XL engine, I suggest a 180XL as it boasts the most bang for its weigh (5.5Tons giving you 116kph) sadly this engine costs more then the entire mech , close to 3 million cbills.
COM-2D (180XL template) <---what you'll aim for, note the downgrading of DHS to single heat sinks.
COM-2D Derpmando <-- Eh hmmm not one of my better works but im in a hurry (need to cook supper <.<) It brings more speed, more ammo and a smigin more firepower. All in all im not terribly comfortable with this design all around, you basically are a ECM with legs and your best bet is to stick to something big that would appreciate the cover, a assault that looks like he knows what hes doing or a LRM launcher thats sprouted legs.
