MechWarrior 3 is the closest to the table top rules, and its fun, really fun! The reason why it was fun: it most closely simulates piloting a battlemech.

In Mechwarrior 3 there is no such thing as:
ECM blocking missle locks
Poptarting
pinpoint accurate AutoCannon spam
PPC boating
srm spam

The walking animation is better than what we have now in MWO! Mechwarrior 3 was not a perfect game however and did have LRMS that all hit one section of the mech, but this was due to the lack of computing power at the time. but LRMS were dodgeable if you moved 65+ KPH

The best part of the game was that heat actually had an effect, you slowed down, shut down at 70% (without override), and alpha striking with four ppcs shut you down, 5 or more and you explode

If MWO had gameplay mechanics of MechWarrior 3 combined with today's computing power and the smooth controls of MWO, MechWarrior Online would be out of beta by now. We would have a balanced, strategic, and fun game!

Go play MW3 for yourself and look for yourselves. Please don't get angry at the rather dumb (but competent with heavy/assaults) AI :P

P.M. Me if you are serious about wanting to get MechWarrior 3 to work with Windows 7, I could only guess with XP and Vista.

I, too, love Mechwarrior 3. But it was not perfect.

One flaw is the "mech's are gunbags" syndrome, which is probably also an artifact of its time (though at least it was partially justified since those mechs were all omnimechs, they just didn't have the tech to adjust your mech's looks based on the weapon you equipped.)
Lasers where hit-scan with no beam duration, so you didn't need to boat 4 PPCs to insta-kill an enemy mech - boating 12 ER Medium Lasers would suffice.

I don't think the mechanics adhered close to the table top rules. It just followed their spirit better in some ways - like actually focusing the heat system on the drawbacks of high heat, and not just treating it as a "renewable ammo for energy weapons" like PGI sometimes seems to do.

Well it isnot completely off topic, since it is about MW games and how they should "feel". I never played 3 ( I know I know), although I did acquire it a few years back, so I can say how valid the OP claim is , yet.

Mechwarrior 3 is the worst game you would ever want to base a multiplayer game around. :)

There was no poptarting, no brawling, no lights or meds or heavies, missiles or special equipment.

There was only one thing... Daishis equipped with enough weaponry to destroy a leg in one shot which meant an instakill of the mech in question (in MW3, loosing a single leg amde your mech "die").

Former Mechwarrior games were good for PVE games - because they were designed for that.
But MWO is Multiplayer only - so you can not compare those games with MWO - even when you have the same flaws.

Yes.. go play a 14 year old Single Player game if you want to know what MWO should feel like.

Actually you can compare

- Better Autocannons
- LB-X were long range and big damage
- MG's were more useful
- Flamers were more useful
- SSRMs were not autobot missiles
- UAC's were the same damage as AC's, but fired faster
- ECM Balance
- Jump Jet Thrust and Evasion
- NARC worked with SRMs (because its supposed to in Battle Tech)
- Pulse Lasers were 'pulse' and always on if you held down the trigger but could "over charge"

What made MW3 out of balance? Extreme Customization (any weapon on any Mech, if you had the weight and slots) and Legging = Game Over. Underlying though was the mechanics for Battle Tech weapons and equipment that just "worked." MW4 and LL borrowed concepts and improved upon them, LL being the last iteration of a good Mech game.

MWO tried to re-invent the wheel, instead of working with balance that worked, and thus there are mega issues:

- ECM Unbalance
- Missiles
- SSRMs are auto-botting easy mode
- Heat Sinks raise heat caps instead of dissipating heat (no heat penalties like speed)
- UAC's are full damage double shot (with rolling dice 'jams')
- MG's are not good
- Flamers are not good
- LB-X are not good, no range advantage, no bonus damage
- NARC is not good
- Pulse Laser Mechanics aren't great

Combined with issues that plagued MW3/4: Customization
