I don't have alot of money so i have to pick what i buy carefully, but what i want to know is whats a good source to pick up or look online to find out more about the timeline,era e.t.c of when this game is going to take place?

I'd like to second this link. Just sit down and read the whole thing, and you'll really get a sense of what battletech is like. Especially read the part from the exile all the way to immediately prior to the clan invasion. The succession wars are really the heart and soul of battletech, The clans were latecomers on the scene. These houses have been at war for centuries, and the animosity between them goes very deep. Just imagine if you had access to recordings showing soldiers from a country massacring your countrymen, you'd want to go get them. This is how the citizens of the successor states feel about each other.
