Quit focusing on the minutia of PPC this, Alpha that, and convergence this, that, or the other.
The problem is not the weapons, it is the matchmaker.
Assaults and heavies vs mediums and heavies is a fail.
Lights on one team and none on the other in Conquest is a fail.
Trial mechs on one team and none on the other is a fail.
NOW....
Take all your gripes about PPCs, missiles, and getting alpha'd to death and look at where your matches fit along this spectrum.
I think you will find that your problem is not with the game engine, but the game matchmaker.

I have a different view almost 180. High damage alphas work regardless of Match maker results.
high damage pin point alphas promote using assaults. mediums dont have the armor or boating power to compete.
lights move so fast it enhances survivability. thus we get what we have.
The game system is the flat out the central issue. then comes host state rewind and missing damage. Then weapon balance.
ELO is fine at this point.... if your complaining about ELO and MM you never played MWO before it was implemented.

A 60 damage alpha strike is a 60 damage alpha strike regardless of how many other mechs and of what class they are.

About a week ago I sat down and recorded the weight difference between the two teams for about 20 games. Turned out that weight disparity was almost always less than 50 tons.

No... pretty sure its the fact that any ******* can put 45 damage on one spot instantly with a single click. Doesnt matter what "skill level" theyre at.
Seriously schmu.ck is censored really
While I agree that unbalanced weight IS a huge problem it is nowhere near as meta and fun killing as all the rest of the things you mentioned.

If you have 4 PPCs and can blow them all at once, and cool half of that heat by the next cooldown, that's ********.
High alpha is a problem, and thats why PGI is finally cracking down on it.
Good riddance.

So when you are stuck on the losing end of a matchmaker failure, you will wish that pinpoint alphas were all you had to worry about.

Sm.ut is also censored. Was so sad. Anyhoo... MM is an issue. Boating is a bigger issue. Paul's knee jerk anti-community decisions is the biggest issue.

Actually this community has had the biggest knee jerk whinefests I have ever seen, from the fluctuation in money received during gameplay to consumables.
Also, that people playing with their friends ruined this game. That was my favorite knee jerk reaction.

That's because the devs never listen or speak. The community cannot properly communicate with the devs, so what happens when a child wants your attention and you don't give it to him, he starts throwing all his toys out of the cot. The vulgarity and immature state of the forum is partially the dev's fault. Especially the one in charge of talking with community on behalf of the devs.
