I'm not sure if this has been asked.

I've been noticing that I am taking damage to my front when being hit in the back. This is most noticeable when my front armor has been depleted, but I still have rear armor. Taking hits in the rear armor then causes damage to my engine.

What's the deal? If this is an intended behavior, then what is the point of having rear armor?

I do realize this can be attributed to a limitation in the collision detection. The game has pretty awful collision detection as it is, so it wouldn't surprise me. For example, if the collision is checked each frame, at 60 fps simulation time, without continuous collision detection (ie 'looking ahead' to see where we're going to be in a frame or more), then it's totally possible the collision isn't registering until after it's already passed through the back of my mech.

Thoughts?

Mech? There are many hitbox locations on various mechs that count as front torso even from behind, such as the thing on top of the Jagermech, the Jenners missile pod, and the atlas' dong.

It depends a lot on the mech that you are using. The fin on Javermechs, the Atlas's cod piece, the SRM racks on Jenners, all of these count as front no matter what angle you hit them from. I'm pretty sure other mechs have weird geometry like that as well.

It could also be an issue with hit detection, or because of HSR you twisted away at the last minute, but the server regsitered a hit before you turned. Could be some other sort of error, but my guess is mech geometry.

Most recently it was in a Spider.

But, how can being hit in the back hurt my engine when I have back armor?

No, I was standing perfectly still shooting an AFK. I know exactly where I was shot from because I knew he was coming already, but I wanted to kill the AFK before moving on. Since I had full rear armor (or very close to full at least) I though it would work, but it didn't...

I have mostly had front hits that counted as rear hits myself.

This has been an old bug since closed beta. I remember hitting a target in the front and the damage goes to the rear armor and vice versa.

If it's a bug I can give it a pass (I guess). I have written collision/hit detection myself, so I know how tricky it can be...

its the were the legs come together and what the toros twists on. we will call it mech @$$ that counts as front armor so its a nice lil trick to hit that.

^ on most mechs, the middle part of the torso between the legs (crouch area) counts as the front CT.
