Is It Worth It For A Casual Player To Buy A Phoenix Package Or Hero Mech To Reduce The Grind?

Really seems that the income really slows down after your cadet bonus and it takes awhile to save for an engine upgrade much less a new mech.
I remember World of Tanks it was really tough saving up for new tanks without a premium tank. The premium tanks are pretty expensive but worth the grind reduction.

Though I confess it's hard to argue with 12 mechs (3 variants of each chassis) with 4 of them having something equal to a hero's bonus in cbills earned per match, each with their own mechbays. I went for it. But I also have experience with the first program like this; the Founder's program, so I know I'll keep using them long after their prime has passed. I still use those mechs even today.

What's casual? Once a week? Twice?
I can tell you that with a premium account and my Firebrand (jagermech hero) I ground out 11 million c-bills in 3 hours last night.
When I first started playing, I had neither and ground my way through Atlases first...let's not discuss how long that took.
I vote yes...worth it. Phoenix pack? Totally an excellent value...if you enjoy the game it'll get you lots to play with.

I do not play that much right now so can wait for the Phoenix package. Occasionally I will drop a few times with a friend or two. I hope that more of my friends would be interested when game is released since most will not touch beta with a ten foot pole. Having some extra mechs would really help when playing with friends so we can drop again after the last team member is destroyed instead of waiting till the match is over.
I play maybe one night a week or once ever two weeks right now. Likely will play more on release when more of my friends play.
The last time we played we had mini map and crash to desktop issues which I hope are fixed now or will be for release. Trying to schedule a time to play with some friends to test the recent patch.
I have a bad feeling that the Phoenix Pack will be obsoleted by a $80+ Clan Pack with Kit Fox, a Nova, a Timber Wolf and a Warhawk or similar package when clans are introduced.

HUD and minimap issues have been 100% resolved for me since their major fix a few months ago. So while there may be other causes for concern, those thankfully are no longer some of them.

That said, when a normal mech runs 10-15, and a hero 15-20, a hero and 2 regular mechs for $20 at each tier isn't bad, and the premium $80 package also includes 3+1 months of premium time as well, so you get discounts on the mechs, 4 hero mechs, and 3+1 months of premium time (the +1 goes away soon). So if you have the money to drop, you're getting a pretty good deal compared to the normal MC deals out there.
Me, as much as I've been tempted to do so, there are few games I've dropped that much cash on, let alone games I've dropped that much cash on for something I won't see till October.
As far as Clans go, that's going to be a balance nighmare depending on how they do it, so I wouldn't expect that anytime soon, and my guess would be clan drops and non-clan drops will be separate in some ways (so you don't get clain and non-clan pairings randomly determined). So your mechs aren't likely to become obsolete any time soon.
So, you willing to spend $80 on stuff you mostly won't see for months? Or are you better served by paying less now by getting some MC and getting premium time or a hero mech? Depends on you.

Hero mechs are a bit lower on the value scale (one mech for a larger price) but they come with an bonus to help you fill out more mechs bought with your inflated winnings. You also get your hero mech right now, not in a few months.
I'm still very happy with my Founder pack I bought over a year ago, I still use my CPLT-C1f on a regular basis (last time I played it someone said "Nice build Redshift!" ingame) . Overall it's a tough choice and one that is very personal; do you like the PP mechs? Do you like any of the hero mechs? Do you have cash to spare for a free to play title?

*Note-I enjoy playing mechs of all classes, so I don't view the Locusts and Shadowhawks as wastes of my time and money*

I'd wait. At least until the end of the early bird promotion, and even then you would only lose a month of premium if you waited more. Let's see if PGI will finally decide to tell us what is going to be in the game at launch

The question then becomes... is that grind worth it? Depending on your own availability to play MWO, that is a personal decision.

And not knowing the other variants and hit boxes. For all we know, we might be buying 12 Awesome/Dragons/Commandos with horrible hard points.
