Today when chain-fire is used with any duration weapon it's pretty much broken.

For example, if I have four medium lasers set to chain-fire, at time 0 laser A will fire for 1.0 seconds, as soon as laser A is complete laser B will fire. However, chain-fire is supposed to fire a weapon every 0.5 seconds and not wait the entire 1.0 seconds of the laser's duration.

The situation is worse if a weapon like a machine gun or flamer is introduced. The chain get's "stuck" on the infinite duration weapon.

Instead, I'd like to propose that chain-fire fire the next weapon in sequence (if its cool down is complete) every 0.5 seconds. If the cool down is not complete, attempt the next-next weapon, and so on.

might help, but if you just click sequentially it accomplishes the same thing. Instead of holding and firing 3 lasers sequentially, just quickly click 3 times and it does that for ya. I know a lot of people probably don't want to have to click each individual time, but I don't mind it.

Ahh, but you're ignoring the new heat penalties. Weapons fire separated by 0.5 seconds does not take the penalty. Since most of those penalties are on lasers, it only makes sense to have chain-fire not extra penalize lasers.

I think you're mis-interpreting the heat penalty. You don't have to wait a whole half second between EVERY weapon you fire. Each type of weapon has a threshhold of how many you can fire in that .5 second time frame without incurring the penalty.

You can fire something like up to 6 or 8 medium lasers within that .5 seconds without triggering the heat penalty. And even if you're clicking, there's a good chance that if you have that many lasers, more than .5 seconds will have elapsed since your first click so you won't be running into the penalty anyway.

ah, yes, I suppose I did forget about the heat penalty, my bad. Well, i guess if clicking you'd just have to be good at knowing how long .5 seconds is. Otherwise, you're proposal really isn't that bad of an idea, i like it.
