CASE in tabletop was never all that, and in fact TPTB didn't want it to be a "be-all" item.

Here, you could just barely talk yourself into using it … While Repair and Rearm existed. :-]

I suggest buffing CASE greatly; As in "legs and head aren't better then a side torso with both CASE and an XL."

To me, that would mean the internal structure would never take damage from an explosion when CASE is present; What would happen is you lose all the ammo/ explosive(s), and the rear armor, of said torso.

This CASE wouldn't help with an explosion in the arm: I'd suggest fudging up an alt-CASE thingie for that (hint-hint).

The Clan Tech model of "normal" CASE would work in any location, preserving the internal structure and front armor, but not other explosives. Touching off one of two ammo crits in the CT would remove all the ammo, and rear armor, but nothing else. Touching of the one ammo crit in the head just removes the ammo (the only armor in question is already gone). In both cases, the 'Mech lives …

CASE II, when it shows up, would only let the one crits-worth of ammo blow out, while the rest remain, sans rear armor, as per above.

Then again, I don't know how crits work in this sim … ;)

First, I recommend the OP start a poll on this. Last I checked, it's policy in this sub-forum. (Besides, I want a chance to vote yes! :( )

Second, as currently implemented, ammo explosions are more annoying than fun, IMO. They're basically random insta-death with no good preventive measure, and happen almost exclusively during early-game encounters with alpha-monsters. The OP's proposed buff would reduce that, somewhat, and make mech-building a little more interesting.

The only possible downside I can think of is that running a Gauss in a torso with an XL engine would be far less dangerous, allowing more chassis to enter the Gauss+PPC cheese-a-thon. IMO, that's not much of a downside, and not a downside at all if they fix the core problems causing said cheese-a-thon.

case is fine as it is. what you are really asking for is less risk for running an xl engine, which should not happen. xl engines have to have a big tradeoff for the huge weight savings you get from running them.

What you are really asking for is for CASE not to work with XL, even though it is supposed to and should work with XL as record sheet variants are apart of the game.

By "working," you mean what? CASE and an XL "works" in as far as it preserves the CT, for salvage, but the unit is still our of the game …

case prevents damage from spreading from the side torso to other sections of the mech and nothing more. it should not be buffed to do more than that. I think you are confusing case with clan xl engines, where you have to blow out both side torsos for a clan xl to die.

C.A.S.E. was never meant to work with inner sphere XL engines to prevent mech shutdown. In this game, it is only useful on mechs with standard engines.

case does not "work" with any xl engine. it never did. all it does is prevents ammo explosion damage from spreading to other sections of the mech. the reason clan xl engines do not die from a single side torso being taken out is that they only have 2 engine criticals in each side torso, it has nothing to do with case.
