how are explained cockpit windows ? are they made of glass ? me think one laser carefully aimed will melt everything and would pull pilots eye out.

Trasparent aluminum. Oh wait, I think that was Star Trek. In canon, many mechs DIDN'T have actual "viewports" and just relied on the holographic projection.

Well I don't know how they explain it in the Battletech universe but... by modern standards we could assume it's a form of transparent aluminum/alumina.

Huh. Well I'll be damned. I just remember the scene in Star Trek 4 when Scotty shows an engineer how to manufacture it.

In the books, the transparent cockpits(like on the Shadow Hawk, Griffin, Atlas, other SLDF era mechs), are made of a transparent metal.

oh yeah, this one seems a good one - aluminum. remember from the chemistry course - some fake jewels also made of aluminum salts

Cockpit glass is not really glass, but a very complex composite of several different materials that make it transparent and just as durable as normal armor.
