...{Richard Cameron}.

I'm usually a pretty easy going guy, I like to have a good time and no worry about too much. I have a wife and a 2 year old daughter and 2 cats.

Lately though, when I jump behind MWO it's like i'm in rush hour traffic surrounded by idiots in oversized pickups and volkwagons. I can't believe how bad the players I'm getting matched up with are!! On average I get 2-4 kills and 600+ dmg in my victor 9s. I'm seeing idiots getting killed without firing a shot. Mechs wandering aimlessly into the swarms of enemies. Fools sitting on thier own cap thinking it was the enemies. People using joysticks to aim their torso. The list goes on.

So recently I've begin to rage and to be honest it's a completely new thing for me. If the team is bad, I tell them so. If some one is being an ***** I call him a ****** (or a lesser word). If someone is being annoying I blow up his mech and then run over his ego in chat. I think I've made some people cry.

What is going on here?!? This may be the end of PUG dropping for me (which is 70% of my MWO time). Is it ELO saddling me with green and not-so-smart players? My kill ratio is like 2.74 but my W/L is below 1. How can I enjoy this game without getting pissed off at noobs.

My recommendation?

Join a unit with people coordinated on TS or Ventrillo.

Well, if the ELO is anything like LoL, your probably getting dropped with Green-recruits and some Elite player's. Since Greenies don't have any stats, since their just beginning. And you know about the elites. They been playing as long as you.

Just try and let it go, its better to breath easy and let it go. Some people may be DERPDERPHERPYDERP, so what though? Their new 99% of the time and need guidance. Some just don't take guidance well. Try to take it easy is all I can say.

It can be frustrating, but it's just a game. Thankfully, the team of sods I ended up against last night was on the other side... Poor, poor folks... Mechs standing in one spot taking hit after hit, looking around, but not moving... then, there was the Raven that ran straight at me, took an AC20 to the face and tried to get away by... running straight backwards. Two more hits and he was gone. No idea what that was.

Anyway, good luck!

Not to mention that even good players have bad nights. One step too far around that blind corner, one extra lucky shot from a sniper, your entire team turns around to another heading and you notice just that tiny bit too late, all of it happens to just about any pilot at least once or twice a night. You get the best results from dropping in a TS 4-man, but personally when I pug I don't really care so much or pay as much attention as when I'm dropping with lance-mates.

This is what is killing you:

KD ratio is meaningless, and what really count towards "ELO" is WL ratio.

Keep killing stuff with your Victor and your w/l (and your elo) will go up, and you'll get matched with better players.

But does being mean help your team? Does diminishing others teach them to be better pilots? Does ruining people's experience makes you feel that good?

We all suffer from being in a bad team, face-palming from start to a painful finish. Sometimes even the best veterans can be part of the problem. Bad days happen... although I agree that there are simply bad players out there among genuine newbies who have no idea what to do. Feeling frustrated is not an excuse to be a jerk. It may be time for you to leave the PUGs for a while.

Also, sometimes, if your ELO is really high you may end up matching with low ELO players... to balance the average or whatever.

I'm sorry, but that is not how it works. You are mistaken.

How does the match maker compose a teams Elo rating, is it average rating or closest to a target?

It's closest to a target value, so the match maker starts trying to make a match for an Elo of say 1300 and will pull in players to those teams closest to those values; however, as mentioned earlier within growing thresholds and those curves will be tuned. Currently it may be a bit 'sloppy' about how it's filling those buckets but over time it will be tuned to be much more precise.

We need to do this carefully over time as generally the cost of precision is time to find a match we want to slowly find a very nice balance between time to find a match and the number of matches that are correctly composed

You may however endup in a game with new players + a few veterans on both sides when the match maker can't find anybody to fill all the spots. But then it is that game or no game at all.

He's right! We should get matched with people of our own skill and ability instead of the newbs. My recommendation for PGI would be to have a range that you would be matched up with, like 0-250 drops, 250-500 drops and then it opens up from 500-infinity. That should reduce the amount of Puggernaughts and lemmings we get paired with!

And here's the reason why...since ELO is (as far as the devs stated) only relying on your W/L ratio, your ELO-value is actually dropping and dropping and dropping and..i think you got the point by now . The ultimate goal for the ELO system here is to put you into a bracket where your W/L is excactly 1, not more not less. So what you are doing now is on the one hand farming new/inexpirienced and or bad players while at the same time beeing matched with them. (what will most likely happen is your Elo-value dropping so low that at some point you can drag the whole team, kicking and screaming, over the finish line)

Please read this:

The match maker is trying to put you into a match with people of our own skill and ability. It won't however always be able to find them. Because you know, they're not playing. So you get the next best thing.

edit:

And keep in mind that it works both ways. There might not be enough new players, so they get a few veterans in their match to fill it out.
