With so much of the community warfare pillar unknown yet, its hard to tell how much commitment is the minimum.
MT_Sheik long time leader of the 331st RBMD put it like this in 2005:
"A word of caution - we are an online unit that plays competitively in leagues. If you can't make a regular appearance and/or stay in touch, then this is not for you. This is not just a social club. Socializing is important to us, but that is not the primary reason why we're together."
The goal is to play a major part in this game (as far as that is possible for a mercenary unit). As much as any other unit we go into this game pretty much with the knowledge that everyone else has, which is not a lot.
Training sessions and maybe regular playing times will happen if necessary. Apart from that its a mandatory one evening a week where you gather up, talk about important stuff and what will happen next week. Then you disperse either into gaming, make arrangements for the upcoming week or go about your own way, whatever suits you. If you can not make that date, then simply post on forums you can not. Just stay in touch, I guess you get the drift.
I hope that answer is specific enough, given the pretty hazy situation all units/clans are in regarding the community warfare part of the game.

I haven't been this excited since my first drop, and I killed Nailor on accident.
Just need to get my desktop overhauled (hopefully within the next couple of weeks) and I will jump into a cockpit and get some practice in.
