I'm going to toss my own 2 cents into this. I don't have a mic (nor do I live in an environment I could realistically use one in) so voice chat from me is out. That said, I refuse to use out of game services within a game. I even hate out of game guild/clan/whatever sites your expected to be part of.

What I want is to sit down, start a game, and simply play. Not fiddle around finding 1-11 other people on some voice chat system for hours, co-ordinate the in-game to out-of-game divide to setup the team, and then finally get to play. I'm an adult who could get interrupted get called away anytime, not some 'hardcore gamer' who plays games all day.

Hence "If it's not in the game, I won't use it". I hate the push to voice, my SO, her kids, my room mates, or anyone else does not need to hear me playing a game nor do they want to.

No,it isn't.The point is that everyone would then have an equal footing of communication by default.Unless you think trying to type out information in the heat of battle is just as easy as instantly communicating via voice without having to take your focus off of dodging/shooting/playing?

Communication is the only real divide between the average teamspeak premade and the pugs.At least from what i can gather from the very few times I've bothered to join TS.The general pool of players there is just as good or crappy as your average pug.No better,no worse.Joining a TS premade doesn't magically make anyone a super awesome elite mechwarrior. The only difference is the ability to relay information quickly and efficiently without losing focus on the game.Well, that and being able to coordinate builds with your team mates, which is also a big deal.

Put everyone on equal footing from the start, and I guarantee you will see different results.

This.... Not only is this commo but the fact you put the premades together with the pugs from the start. This needs to change with choices... and or A CHOICE... to ensure we keep people around vs tick them off in the first 5 matches.
